The late photographer-provocateur, who died from AIDS-related illness in 1989, chose Morrisroe, a frequent contributor to New York magazine, as his biographer. The result is a deeply sympathetic portrait of one of the most controversial artists of the 20th century. His work offsets with luminous elegance and compositional rigor its sometimes shocking content: not only absurdly lush blossoms and haughty socialites but also male nudes and explicit sadomasochistic scenes that reflected his own obsessive forays into the Manhattan underworld. The book explores his rise in the vital art world of 1970s Manhattan as well as his bond with rocker Patti Smith, whom Dali described as "a Gothic crow"; his sometimes loving, sometimes mutually exploitative relationship with his lover and patron, Sam Wagstaff; and the moving coincidence of his greatest critical successes occurring with the insidious and slow depredations of his illness. Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-89) gained his greatest fame when a retrospective of his works led to obscenity charges against Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center. But even while he defied the art world with graphic photographs revealing his deepest sexual fantasies, Mapplethorpe was acclaimed for his celebrity portraits and flower images. Six months before his death from AIDS, the highly controversial photographer selected Morrisroe, a feature writer for New York and the New York Times, among other publications, to document his life. Whereas Jack Fritscher's candid memoir, Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera (LJ 10/1/94), is largely drawn from personal reminiscence and is more narrowly focused, Morrisroe's compelling work is based on interviews with Mapplethorpe himself as well as hundreds of family members, lovers, and colleagues. Morrisroe provides intimate, often painful, details of his rigid Catholic upbringing, the sexual obsessions that drove him to the the gay S-M scene, and his intense relationships with rock singer Patti Smith and aristocratic lover Sam Wagstaff. This is a really great biography. Mostly I like it because it was in fact authorized by Mapplethorpe. I feel like I am getting factual information, which with unauthorized books, you really are getting rumor and no perspective from the subject themselves. I also think Patricia Morrisroe is very objective in her accounts and is very good a giving you the name of whom she obtained the story or quote, so you really don't see much of "her" in the book. In other words, it is well researched. When something sounds like opinion or an aside, it almost seems that it came from Mapplethorpe himself. She truly is a good writer and I trust her, which is saying something considering all the garbage in the way of biographies.
Patricias' work deserves all 5 starts. Fantastic book. I highly recommend buying it, someplace else, if you're at all interested. Apparently this is a print on demand book. Very poor production value. The actual writing is amazing I just finished and I wish it wasn't over. I went so far as to read to the very back cover which I how I discovered it was a print on demand. I'll have to find a good copy of the book someplace else. The photographs are terrible in terms of reproduction quality. See sample - It's being generous.
Engrossing biography that held my interest throughout. But I must agree with the previous reviewer that the quality of this book is a disgrace. The paper, the typeface, the smudgy ink, the terrible photo quality, all combine to make this a very unattractive book. There is also a "lump" that goes through the entire book. This almost seems like someone was running off copies on a ten-year-old printer in the basement. I like to keep all of my books, but this one is a disappointment. Content is superb; presentation is atrocious.
A superbly-researched study of the controversial photographer, whose work encompassed such diverse subjects as flowers, celebrity portraits and hardcore sexual fetishism. Through unique in-depth interviews with Mapplethorpe, plus many from his inner circle, Morrisroe creates a layered, incisive portrait of an artist whose brief life may have ended at just 42 (1946-89), but whose reputation continues to grow with the passing decades.. A fine companion piece, although far more illuminating, that the recent HBO documentary, which draw quotes from Morrisroe's interviews throughout as primary sources. An absorbing read, and a must for those seeking more insight than a TV documentary can ever offer.
Altho this is an excellent book, the Kindle edition lacks the photo section that was included in the print edition.
I purchased this biography of Mapplethorpe immediately after reading Patti Smith's memoir about their lives together in NYC in the late 60's, early 70's-- Just Kids. I was not disappointed. Not only does Morrisroe provide more details about Mapplethorpe's early years with Patti Smith, she tells the rest of the story concluding with Mapplethorpe's horrible death from AIDS and the controversy concerning his work. Morrisroe does a very good job of presenting a balanced portrait of a very conflicted individual. Moreover, the story will really bring back the devastating affect of AIDS on the NYC art scene in the mid-1980s.In addition to the details of Mapplethorpe's life, there is some very interesting discussion in the book about photography as an art form and what constitutes "Art." I particularly loved her inclusion of excerpts of from the contemporaneous critics of Mapplethorpe's work. My favorite from Ben Lifson: "In Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud talks about artists who descend into what he calls the maelstrom, meaning the unconscious, and they come back and tell us what was there. Robert went into the maelstrom, no question about it, but he came back with an elegant picture postcard --'Having a wonderful time, wish you were here. Love Robert'"
He said it himself, "my life is far more interesting than my photographs." I can't argue with that, and the book is a fascinating read. Additionally, reading this book has given me a much greater understanding of his art and why he was such a master. I revisited his work after reading much of it, and I'm glad I did. I'm about 1/2 way through it, and then plan to read Patti Smith's book, Just Kids.
