I am an avid reader of books on personal development and self-awareness, and I must say that this really forced me to dig even deeper within.I am now able to call myself out on my own bullsh*t and I kid you not, I'll say things like, "Ok, my inner warrior just came out, but I need to make sure I balance it with my inner caregiver." or "I am definitely a sage right now but I need to make sure I don't become its shadow form: the self-righteous, holier-than-thou, know-it-all type."I am not a therapist or psychologist, but I am an empath and I truly believe this book is helping me help others simply by being more empathetic. This helps me relate to my loved ones who WANT to grow and make positive changes, and I can immediately tell which archetype they're using more of and which are more repressed. It sounds ridiculous when I type it like that, but if you want to gain a deeper and more objective understanding of WHO you are and WHY you do the things you do, you've got to read this book. This will help you become brutally and honestly loving with yourself, which I think is vital if we want to help others do the same. Thank you, Dr. Carol Pearson for sharing your insight.
I read this book to gain a better understanding of people (current and historical) and fictional characters as well as myself. Anyone interested in heroes and villains, storytelling, or psychology will enjoy this book.I did not agree with Pearson's statements about truth being relative (e.g., pages 213, 215). Truth is not relative. There are universal and absolute truths. If there are no universal truths then her whole concept of archetypes is utterly destroyed and this book is worthless because if there are no universal truths then there is no collective unconscious and there are no archetypes, just random and unique personality traits in people that bear some similarities to one another. Also, the last couple of chapters about gender and culture felt like an attempt to make a political statement. "Patriarchy has brought us many gifts, but without the current rise of the female, it was bringing us to the brink of disaster." Pearson says that "we are all aware" that an overemphasis on Warrior values (attributed mostly to men) have brought us to the brink of nuclear war and that "gynocentric" societies, which were always caring and inventive, have been enslaved and disempowered by patriarchal societies. Sounds to me like she's blaming men for a violent world. If women don't have enough Warrior and men have too much Warrior and Warrior is what is leading us to world disaster, then men are responsible, correct? She says this while at the same time arguing that women are too passive (too much Caregiver) and need to develop the Warrior archetype. If we are in such bad shape, then it is dangerous to encourage anyone to develop the Warrior archetype. There is wisdom in this book, you just need to know what to parse out.
This found itself as one of my all-time favorite books. It not only helped me with my writing but I now comprehend so many things about myself, relationships, people of other cultures, organizations and countries. It's applicable to every aspect in life.
This framework is a great tool for helping people make sense of their lives through the lens of stories and typical characters like "The Hero" and "The Fool". I found the first five chapters (explaining the origins and background) a little less helpful than just doing the assessment and diving into the specific chapters related to the Archetypes that were most present for me. I'm also not sure I agree with its discussion of gender.
Carol Pearson, co-creator of the Pearson-Marr Archetypes Indicator, explores 12 archetypes "to help us find ourselves and transform our world." Transformation, in this case, seems to be an inner journey of revising our self-concept, deepening and enriching our ideas about others, and gaining new insights, rather than a program for material engagement with outer circumstances.Purchaser can take the Heroic Myth Index (HMI; I am not sure how this differs from the PMAI, a proprietary instrument) to find out what archetypes are strongest in you. It is an interesting activity. The description of each archetypes tells about its spiritual journey. Self-growth exercises are proposed at the end of the chapter. As well, Pearson includes useful background information about achieving inner balance. The writing is sometimes a bit stodgy, and I prefer more examples. This is outweighed by Pearson's credentials as a professional whose research has contributed to our understanding and use of archetypes as tools for personal understanding and growth.
Even though I'm usually strict about logic and over-generalization, there is a place for broad cultural commentary in the Jungian tradition, and Pearson present a fine instance of it. The prose is clear but I wish there were some concrete examples or case studies.
This book is clearly the result of decades of study and personal work. I used this book as a course manual for an advanced personal transformation group. It was a powerful journey for everyone. As one of my students recently put it, "We got woke!" Thank you for all your hard work Carol Pearson!
As other reviewers have gone over the connection with Joseph Campbell, I'd add that I found it to be a very interesting book for introspection. It's also gives you more information to consider when you're wondering why in the world this person acted that way.
