I am an avid reader of books on personal development and self-awareness, and I must say that this really forced me to dig even deeper within.I am now able to call myself out on my own bullsh*t and I kid you not, I'll say things like, "Ok, my inner warrior just came out, but I need to make sure I balance it with my inner caregiver." or "I am definitely a sage right now but I need to make sure I don't become its shadow form: the self-righteous, holier-than-thou, know-it-all type."I am not a therapist or psychologist, but I am an empath and I truly believe this book is helping me help others simply by being more empathetic. This helps me relate to my loved ones who WANT to grow and make positive changes, and I can immediately tell which archetype they're using more of and which are more repressed. It sounds ridiculous when I type it like that, but if you want to gain a deeper and more objective understanding of WHO you are and WHY you do the things you do, you've got to read this book. This will help you become brutally and honestly loving with yourself, which I think is vital if we want to help others do the same. Thank you, Dr. Carol Pearson for sharing your insight.

I read this book to gain a better understanding of people (current and historical) and fictional characters as well as myself. Anyone interested in heroes and villains, storytelling, or psychology will enjoy this book.I did not agree with Pearson's statements about truth being relative (e.g., pages 213, 215). Truth is not relative. There are universal and absolute truths. If there are no universal truths then her whole concept of archetypes is utterly destroyed and this book is worthless because if there are no universal truths then there is no collective unconscious and there are no archetypes, just random and unique personality traits in people that bear some similarities to one another. Also, the last couple of chapters about gender and culture felt like an attempt to make a political statement. "Patriarchy has brought us many gifts, but without the current rise of the female, it was bringing us to the brink of disaster." Pearson says that "we are all aware" that an overemphasis on Warrior values (attributed mostly to men) have brought us to the brink of nuclear war and that "gynocentric" societies, which were always caring and inventive, have been enslaved and disempowered by patriarchal societies. Sounds to me like she's blaming men for a violent world. If women don't have enough Warrior and men have too much Warrior and Warrior is what is leading us to world disaster, then men are responsible, correct? She says this while at the same time arguing that women are too passive (too much Caregiver) and need to develop the Warrior archetype. If we are in such bad shape, then it is dangerous to encourage anyone to develop the Warrior archetype. There is wisdom in this book, you just need to know what to parse out.

This found itself as one of my all-time favorite books. It not only helped me with my writing but I now comprehend so many things about myself, relationships, people of other cultures, organizations and countries. It's applicable to every aspect in life.

This framework is a great tool for helping people make sense of their lives through the lens of stories and typical characters like "The Hero" and "The Fool". I found the first five chapters (explaining the origins and background) a little less helpful than just doing the assessment and diving into the specific chapters related to the Archetypes that were most present for me. I'm also not sure I agree with its discussion of gender.

Carol Pearson, co-creator of the Pearson-Marr Archetypes Indicator, explores 12 archetypes "to help us find ourselves and transform our world." Transformation, in this case, seems to be an inner journey of revising our self-concept, deepening and enriching our ideas about others, and gaining new insights, rather than a program for material engagement with outer circumstances.Purchaser can take the Heroic Myth Index (HMI; I am not sure how this differs from the PMAI, a proprietary instrument) to find out what archetypes are strongest in you. It is an interesting activity. The description of each archetypes tells about its spiritual journey. Self-growth exercises are proposed at the end of the chapter. As well, Pearson includes useful background information about achieving inner balance. The writing is sometimes a bit stodgy, and I prefer more examples. This is outweighed by Pearson's credentials as a professional whose research has contributed to our understanding and use of archetypes as tools for personal understanding and growth.

Even though I'm usually strict about logic and over-generalization, there is a place for broad cultural commentary in the Jungian tradition, and Pearson present a fine instance of it. The prose is clear but I wish there were some concrete examples or case studies.

This book is clearly the result of decades of study and personal work. I used this book as a course manual for an advanced personal transformation group. It was a powerful journey for everyone. As one of my students recently put it, "We got woke!" Thank you for all your hard work Carol Pearson!

As other reviewers have gone over the connection with Joseph Campbell, I'd add that I found it to be a very interesting book for introspection. It's also gives you more information to consider when you're wondering why in the world this person acted that way.

Gus & Me: The Story of My Granddad and My First Guitar, by Keith Richards

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has penned a poignant picture book depicting his close relationship with his grandfather Gus. The author is keenly aware that his musical accomplishments will mean little to the book's target audience and focuses entirely on his childhood, rather than on his later career. Back matter gives readers some basics on his life, including the charmingly humble statement "Keith later began playing in a band with a group of friends, including Mick Jagger. They called themselves the Rolling Stones." He relates his experiences spending time with Gus, who took the boy on walks and gave him his first guitar, which started a lifelong passion for music. There's little of the hilariously snarky Keith that adult readers will know from his autobiography, Life (Little, Brown, 2011); written in free verse, the text is tender, though never cloying, and both the author's love for music and his grandfather come through. Loose black-and-white pen-and-ink illustrations, done by Keith's daughter, affectionately depict the title characters, as well as the various objects in their orbit (musical instruments, Big Ben, tea kettles, a double-decker bus), while backgrounds provide rich washes of purples, blues, yellows, and green, emphasizing the beauty and the sense of magic of the music. A gentle story celebrating the importance of family.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Review

* "[The story] is all told so naturally and with such sweet verve that readers may not notice that this is the legendary guitarist of the Rolling Stones. The vibrant and evocative pictures are done by Richards' daughter...Over swathes of rich color she lays pen-and-ink drawings of figures and instruments, architectural details, free-floating musical notes--and cakes and tea things--that brilliantly carry the power of love and music into visual imagery. A CD of the author reading the story and playing a bit of "Malagueña" is included, and it is pretty wonderful, too. A beautiful example of artistic bookmaking, a story of family love and lore, and the magic of music personified in a way that's utterly accessible to children--and their dazzled parents."―Kirkus, starred review* "Theodora Richards, Keith's daughter, contributes fluid, inked sketches and other freestyle graphic elements that exude love and spontaneity. The accompanying CD proves Richards is as adept at telling bedtime stories as he is performing on stage."―Publishers Weekly, starred review"This rocks, though the effect is more like being rocked in a grandparent's arms."―Booklist"Beautifully told."―The New York Times

There is such a fine line between being a genius and being a knucklehead, sometimes. It is easy to get distracted by the hard living rock guitarist image and forget that Keith is one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century. Keith has led a remarkable, incredible life, despite making choices that were sub-optimal at certain points. His essentially humanity shows through in this warm little story. Keith has this ability to look at life and appreciate all of the little marvels that others might take for granted. Like Keith's best songwriting, this story delivers an emotional impact without being overtly sentimental. This story works in the context of being a children's story, but still feels like an authentic tale being told. It isn't simplistic or trite, yet still makes sense to kids. As always, Keith is full of surprises.

A wonderful, touching tale of the love between a Grandfather and Grandson that led to a shared passion for music. I had read the story in Keith's autobiography Life, but the addition of his daughter Theodora's (who is named for Theodore Augustus Dupree, the titular Gus) illustrations adds to the family bond evoked by the story. Ordered a copy for my Grandniece and one for myself; my only regret is I don't get a copy of the CD with Keith reading the story since I got the Kindle edition...maybe Quinn and I can share! If you are a fan of music of any kind and wish to pass that love along, buy this book. If you have grandchildren or grandparents whom you love (or loved) and wish to pass that love along, buy this book. And if you love Keef, definitely BUY THIS BOOK!

Wonderfully written children's books by one of rocks greatest guitar players, Keith Richards, and the illustration by his daughter is amazing. It truly is a very inspiring story written for children. It provides a positive story about the relationship between a grandfather and his grand child and how this grandfather was the main inspiration in Mr. Richards learning and mastering the guitar. In this time of such decisiveness its nice to have a book which provides such a positive inspiration towards a "want it now" generation.

A precious children's book, but really nice for the rock music, Rolling Stone, Keith Richards fan as well. The accompanying CD is a touch of whimsy for fans of Keith and the illustrations by his daughter, Theodora, are enchanting. This may have been a "family affair" book, but there is nothing chintzy about it. It is a quality, well-written, beautifully illustrated book which I would recommend for both children and adults. I enjoyed it very much and for the record I am a Beatle fan, not necessarily a Rolling Stone fan.

My first book before my boy was born. Huge Keith fan. A little above his level (1 year) just yet, but when I played the CD of Keith's voice, he perked up and watched & listened while I turned the pages for him.Who's have thought!

This is a loving remembrance of a grandfather and how he taught the love and mystery of music to his grandson after the terror of war. Keith Richards has carried that gift forward in The Rolling Stones for over fifty years.

On endearing memory and writers pen - Keith Richards. On sketchbook with the good looks Theodora Richards and instrumental to making the whole world as we know it with the Rolling Stones - Augustus Dupree. This book for children even helps landscape the history of the 'Stones', for adults who haven't read 'Life', by Mr. Richards. Family values and hard work along with lasting gratitude for those who help us on the way to achieving our dreams. Kids need strong support these days, they should be able to find plenty of it within the family. And to think all those years of my listening to the 'Stones' and being rebellious to the family trying to learn the guitar...

the file came as a AAX File (.aax) which makes it very difficult to download to my MP3 and impossible to listen to on my laptop. It open using Google Chrome, which simply doesn't work on my computer.

Review

Three harrowing tales... stories of those who have survived the 'pain, grief, and world of trouble' of a good climb gone terribly wrong. (Outside magazine)Forget the hype about the new 'extreme' sports; mountaineering has been around for centuries and it's clearly the most extreme of all ... it's hard to beat Peter Potterfield's In the Zone. (Men's Journal)A compelling and somewhat troubling look at the dark side of mountaineering. (Jon Krakauer, author, Into Thin Air)

It's very frustrating that the author does not go into any analysis of why the accident happened. It was clearly a belay failure, but how did that happen. And it was compounded by the fact they they were off route. I bought this book just before successfully climbing Chimney Rock myself with the same route plan (but staying on it). I could not see how it would be possible to get off route in the area where they did (other places maybe), and I would have liked to see an analysis of this as well.

I am just here to echo a lot of what the others have said. This book was given as a gift so I didn't read the reviews beforehand but am not surprised that my thoughts on it are pretty much the same as others.First, can someone get an editor in here? It's not even that it's poorly written. It's just poorly edited. It reads like a first draft. Certain ideas or situations are repeated. And then repeated again. If you can get past that, it is worth reading. I blew through it in two days. Mostly this was due to the momentum of the first story.Where I disagree with some people is that I feel the second story did have a point. It's just not spelled out and more left to what it meant to you as a reader. It did invoke thoughts based off my own outdoor experiences and I feel that's the point. Just to think what you will. Was it worth it? Was it all just another case of chasing the dragon? The first story is why I gave it three stars. If it were based on the last story - the authors own story - I would give it none. As someone who reads about accidents to learn (both in my outdoor pursuits and profession, it's all in the details. You have to exhaust and explain everything that was going on to get the whole picture of the incident so that there can be a learning experience without having that experience yourself. Maybe the author wanted to leave it open as in the second story but there is a gap one particular detail that leaves a hole the size of the Grand Canyon. I find this inexcusable. If he didn't want to speak to it, he should have just said so. The story is without lesson or moral and otherwise just a long story about a rescue. A dramatic one, I'll give him that, but with the glaring omission, I just can't get past it.In spite of this, still worth a read if for nothing else, the first story.

When I was in college, one of my dear friends became paralyzed after a mountain climbing accident. It was a shocking experience because I was very unfamiliar with the sport at the time. I suppose my friend's accident spurred my curiosity but I believe that my early interest in the sport was initiated by fear and wonder. I am fascinated by the mountains that attract those individuals who feel compelled to conquer them. The entire sport enthralls and repells me. I seek to understand it but abhor the senseless loss when something goes wrong and claims the lives of these magnificent men and women, leaving in their wake their loved ones and friends to forever try and rationalize their death. While those of you felt this book lacked accountability and content, I lack the experience in mountain climbing to be so critical of the stories projected by the author. I was able to experience through my imagination what it must have felt like to live through these mountaineering challenges. I feel no need to ask too many questions in respect to faults, for I know so very little about the sport. I simply held the stories in my mind, reflected on their enormity and danger, and appreciated the skills of rescuers and the drive of certain people to climb to the highest mountain and breathe the thinest of air.For that, I enjoyed this book. Quite simply, I appreciated reading the stories with my feet planted firmly on my floor.

The first story, that of Colby Coombs on Alaska's Mount Foraker, is the most intense of the three. An avalanch swept Coombs and his two partners off the side of the mountain, incredibly he survived and, dispite injuries and lost equipment, managed to walk out under his own power. Motivated not simply by a desire to live but by the knowledge that if he died too his dead partners' friends and families would never know what had happened to them. Bullheaded persistance in the face of physical pain worked for Scott Fischer on K2 but on Everest in '96 the same trait caused his death. As for Mr. Potterfield's own story, I personally think it's quite reasonable for him to focus on the rescue rather than the cause of the accident. A mistake was made certainly but what's the point in placing blame? Far more important - and more interesting - is the skill and effort that went into rescuing him. I can't say I noticed any problems with his writing style either.

This book is made up of stories where "what's the worst that can happen?" does. The first, an Alaskan mountaineering epic, leaves the reader amazed that the lone survivor made it; the second, about Scott Fischer on K2, leaves the reader amazed at Fischer's having survived as long as he did; and the third, Potterfield's own story, spawned much heated discussion and controversy among climbers. Clearly, Potterfield fell because he lost his grip on the rock, but why did he fall to the end of the rope? Did his belayer drop him...? That would certainly explain why he doesn't analyze the accident in more detail. In any case, the last story is the best, not only because it explodes those dearly-held beliefs in fainting before impact, but because it gives a detailed chronicle of a difficult high-angle rescue. Unfortunately, Potterfield does not write very well, but I suspect most readers will hardly notice.
