Bought all 3 books. Read the first book and loved it. Read the second book and was disappointed. It seem that the first few of chapters was nothing but complaining. The writing was not as good as the first book and I just hope the 3rd book is better.

Kenn Miller has written a book that is as important as it is readable. His closing chapter, "Lessons Learned", should be compulsory reading for every American. The lessons of which he writes were learned in a terribly hard school by soldiers who deserved vastly better treatment from their commanders than they ever received and whose resolute and skilful performance in the face of disgraceful misuse bears eternal witness to their quality as human beings as well as soldiers. This book needs to be read (and re-read) from first page to last - and happily it's a cracking good read with a delightful leavening of humour as well as being an important part of America's military lexicon. Don't miss it.

Very pleased w/this book as I was w/Book I if the same title. I know I will enjoy this book as well as Book III if it is as well written as Book I was.I did observe Book II does not offer a map w/areas referred to in the book of South Viet Nam as Book I did have. For readers unfamiliar w/Viet Nam & not having a map hinders them from understanding the areas where large numbers if the enemy were and to better understand how they moved south from the DMZ to finally take over Saigon & the rest of South Viet Nam.Being a Viet Nam Infantry Veteran as a Scout Dig Handler w/the 58th & 42nd Scout Dog Platoons (respectively) w/the 101st Abn Div including walking point w/LRRPS & Sniper Teams.I would recommend this book to fellow VN Infantry Veterans and anyone interested learning about the horrors, dangers, bonds w/fellow unit Soldiers, the obstacles & heartbreak of that war.

I've read documentaries that were better written. Only read half the book before becoming bored with the way it reads and closed it out.

When Ashton Prindle was shot I, senior medic for 101st Div Hqtr, was summoned to the location of his unfortunate misadventure, I started an IV, we carried him on a poncho through the cemetery to the graded road. A chopper, slick ship, was called in for a dust off.I have to give it 4 Stars, why would you take a seriously wounded soldier Back to Division for a dust off?He was the last soldier I treated before going back to the "world". And, I have been to "Rolling Thunder" 3 times and pray, He was a real Hero. Just saying Trimble.

Good read on Vietnam Ranger work. I would recommend this book be read by the so called top brass, who seem to be on another planet when it. Comes to planning missions and intelligence info. In other current war books I've read ,this is still an issue. Who trains these upper brass dummies.???

I have read several books byMiller Linderer and the others. I was in Phu Bai in 1972 when the war was winding down. The LRPs were still operating out of MACV SOG compound, Camp Eagle had shut down by then.This is a well told history of how it was in I Corps and the Hue-Phu Bai area. I recommend this series of books highly .

Gr 4–7—Rufus is on a weekend visit to his grandma's house in the country. His spirit animal, a squirrel named Sidney, is along for the ride. The story opens with a short recap of Into the Woods (Kids Can, 2012): in an attempt to stop the destruction of a forest, Rufus calls upon Thunderbird for the power to stop the giant trucks. Thunderbird tells Rufus to carve a totem, which he soon learns will turn him into a Sasquatch. All is going well for Rufus and his friend Penny as they explore the woods, until ravens begin to appear in trees overhead. Though the ravens know they cannot take the totem by force, they are confident they can outwit Rufus, Penny, and Sidney. This leads to an adventurous battle over the totem. A common term for a group of ravens is an "unkindness" of ravens and in this title there is, of course, a play upon those words as "the bad guys" in this volume are ravens. The very first page is a beautiful piece of art from Hicks, the likes of which we've never seen from her before. It is a nature scene with animals and quite a stunning opening page. Hick's artwork is broadening out in this volume, moving away from her character driven style and incorporating animals, both anthropomorphically and realistically along with nature scenes. A different style for her but she keeps her characters in the form we are used to and pulls off the rest nicely. I enjoyed the first "Bigfoot Boy" volume more than this one. Here the story was simply about the ravens trying to steal Rufus' totem and he and his gang of friends trying to get it back. It's all over the place and actually ends without a resolution on a cliffhanger note with the words "to be continued". I'm not terribly impressed with Torres writing or plotting here but I will read the next volume to see how Hicks art develops in this new turn towards animals and nature.

Great Book. Don't star negotiating without this book!

This has to be one of the most irritating books that I have ever read. The author spends an excrutiating amount of time going over trivial details. This book could be half of it's legnth if he didn't use this poor writing style.The material itself is very scant, and there are many better negotiating books available. If this is your first Negotiation book then it may be useful, however if you are a professional in the field or intend on gaining some new insights from this book you will be greatly disapointed. This problem is made worse by the fact that, the author constantly promises to introduce new tactics 'later' in the book - many of which he only spends a line or two on.In short, the author promises a great deal on the back cover and introduction, but fails to deliver on most of them. After reading this book, I felt like I wasted the last few hours. Now who do I negotiate with to get that time of my life back?

If you have participated in negotiations before, you'll know how to decide what sections of the plentiful advice here apply to your needs. From the most basic and self-evident advice (get it in writing) to the psychological (stay friendly) to the more sophisticated (be aware of your opponent's culture), author Peter Wink tries to cover a variety of negotiating situations and tactics. His suggestions vary from hardball (turn up the heat and use uncomfortable chairs), which may be difficult to implement, to puffball (walk away smiling), depending on what your opponent throws at you. And if he sounds a little paranoid when describing negotiations that went wrong, take his experiences as a cautionary warning. If you need to do a better job of getting what you want, we recommend this useful guide. Much of its advice will be helpful and applicable - just think like a negotiator and chose wisely.

I was very impressed by the way of writing and the contents of the book. I liked how Peter first starts with developing the right negotiating mindset. I personally believe that this is very important. I must tell you that I have never considered negotiating in a shop for example as something decent. Nowit is a different ball game for me. I can't not think of a way to reduce the price in a shop I go. I totally changed. I am inspired and burn from desire for my next big purchase to do. The book is full and very complete I think. All the tactics are extremely useful and it even surprised me at the endwhere Peter includes things like Employee and Retail discounts.Reading the examples on the different tactics I wished there were counteract on the counteract of using the strategies. I don't know if this is possible, but would have been very useful for me.I must say it is a great book and I have already recommended it to some of my fellow investors in our property investment club. We give specific attention to negotiations and I thing this book is one of the 'must reads'.This book forms an important part in my wealth library.Thank you Peter.

I don't usually recommend books but I think this book is awesome. I have put some of Peter's negotiating techniques in action and they work. I found the book not only informative but also interesting and doable. The execises were very helpful and certainly help to create the negotiating mindset that Peter talks about.Make sure and read each chapter over until Peter's teachings are fully understood and make sure and do the exercises.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to win in the negotiating process. Can't wait to read his next book.

I think Peter teaches people how to use negotiating techniques in a format that everyone can understand and put to use in everyday life. He covers every area.Additionally I especially like how he tells you what to avoid in both personal and business deals.I highly recommend this book and have read it several times. When you purchase it read it a few times and be sure to complete the exercises in the book as they are very helpful.

Peter Brannen solves that problem, by writing a book that is packed with the scientific history of our planet that is remarkably readable, and quite funny as well. The content approaches text book level, but it reads like a novel. Brannen paints vivid pictures of creatures and atmospheric events alike that demonstrate his profound literary abilities (it's hard to believe this is his first book). It is also incredibly insightful... in addition to covering the entire earth's history, he examines our current state, and what the future may have in store for us humans. Read it. Learn. Enjoy.

Peter Brannen is an extremely gifted science writer in the tradition of the venerable Richard Dawkins and much wittier than Stephen J. Gould. He provides here an excellent overview of our current thinking on prehistoric mass extinction events.The basic concepts (such as the carbon cycle) are well explained, down to the appropriate level of detail: there really is no need to descend into astrophysical details and try to explain why the early Sun was faint, and the many scientific uncertainties and counterviews are highlighted. More importantly the author presents all this with a 'helicopter view', never losing sight of the whole, something professional scientists (like myself) struggle with mightily when communicating their findings. He also includes lots of funny anecdotes, making this just a terrific page-turner. The whole story reads like a thriller where few of the protagonists die peacefully of old age and evidence against the suspects and what weapons they used is well explained, and which all ends well with us triumphant humans appearing in the final chapter to enjoy the show. If you think that great writers only write novels, do read this book instead. It is quite US-centered, with Americans even appropriating the cause for the first extinction with the rise of the Appalachians, but it all fits the intrigue.What I came away with is that only the earliest mass extinction- the one that ended the Devonian- is believed to have occurred directly by climate change (cooling). Life has since evolved to become much more robust, occupying a bewildering variety of niches and able to weather a wide range of climates- merely laughing at the 'recent' Ice Ages. Subsequent extinctions after that Devonian event required more sudden perturbations, like volcanoes and meteorites, and the wild CO2 swings that accompanied these just made things worse. I especially like the view that a large meteorite initiated the extinction of almost all dinosaurs (read the book if you still believe that all dinosaurs went away), but that this also caused Earth's magma to slosh around, helping a hotspot to pierce through India, which was just moving over it.Now where things get tricky is that this book is written in an era of heated debate over anthropogenic CO2, but that is not what the book is primarily about. What few fail to appreciate is that today's greenhouse gases are likely to greatly affect human civilization, but much less so all other life forms. So saying that the Paris agreement attempts to 'save the Planet' is therefore somewhat misleading. Coastal areas will disappear, but places like Canada and Siberia will much better support agriculture to feed us (which the FAO says should increase productivity threefold this century). Yet of course there is the ominous risk of hitting 'tipping points', so count me in as a climate worrier. Still, I would be much more concerned about an immediate return to the next Ice Age (again, this possibility is well discussed in the book). Also, we won't be pushing CO2 levels to the 30,000 ppm or so seen in the past (todays counter just passed 400). A massive extinction event is in fact ongoing (though not as bad as previous ones), but we are causing that by habitat destruction (appropriating Earth's surface for agriculture and building cities)- changing our climate has not much to do with it. I suspect Mother Nature is just waiting for us humans to go away to resume business as usual- from Her perspective, humanity's demise (through global warming or otherwise) is actually a boon for The Planet.Like I said, all this is a subtle discussion, and this book provides an excellent, well informed and well explained background to this. What is somewhat surprising is that human overpopulation, the elephant in the room, is not discussed. There is just no way Planet Earth can both maintain its biodiversity and 10 billion people, and this is a delicate discussion omitted from this book.

The five mass extinctions are a cliché. We actually have no understanding of what really happened. Peter Brannen has written a remarkable and extremely readable book (his first) to fill in the voids. The level of carbon dioxide soars, crippling the oceans from doing their job, and they return the favor to the air, crippling everything else. The weather turns unimaginably violent. Everything gets wiped out. Land surfaces get scoured. It takes the oceans a good hundred thousand years to regain balance, and then a hundred million years for a new world of plants and animals to evolve and populate the barren Earth. In the interim, Earth is Hell.Brannen assembles the wisdom of renowned paleontologists to put the scenes together. There isn’t much disagreement on the mechanics or the major events. As CO2 rises, so do temperatures, and very few beings are capable of functioning in higher temperature bands. They falter and die. For survivors, there would be nothing to live on.Today we are in remarkably pleasant pause between ice ages, in which the continents have very fortuitously aligned north-south. That allows for migration and survival as different climates take hold. It also keeps the oceans pumping. There is a nice, benign balance to the weather, and the horrific volcanic flows that can deposit literally miles thick lava over entire countries, have ceased.Unfortunately, one species has seen fit to take command, and it is working to throw the balance the Earth has achieved into another era of chaos. We are imposing change at a rate “ten times faster” than the worst events in Earth’s history, say the paleontologists. When temperatures rise just one degree, the balance is upset. We are (laughably) attempting to hold it at another two. That will not support life as we know it. “The entire global economy depends on how quickly we can get carbon out of the ground and into the atmosphere,” says one. And we’re doing it bigger and better even than our volcanoes. As for rising oceans, paleontologists snicker at estimates of .5 to 2m. Every time this happened before, it was more like 15-20m for this kind of temperature rise. Considering all the factors that make a mass extinction, “We are the perfect storm.”One key takeaway is that we cannot learn from the events of the past. Every mass extinction was different. There are so many variables, life forms, different configurations of land and sea, there is no way of predicting numeric outcomes with certainty. Past performance does not guarantee future results. This is an entertaining and enthralling read. I learned a lot about the history of the earth, and I had a decent understanding prior. I only wish the Kindle version had some photos. The writing is great - often amusing, always interesting, and the subject matter couldn't be more important. That there are all these areas nearby that give glimpses into the very remote past is something I was oblivious of, and the other mass extinctions have been alluded to in a lot of my reading (especially by Elizabeth Kolbert in the New Yorker), but I had no idea of their magnitude. That new and spectacular creatures could arise so quickly after life was nearly wiped out is the most eye opening new information.

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-89) gained his greatest fame when a retrospective of his works led to obscenity charges against Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center. But even while he defied the art world with graphic photographs revealing his deepest sexual fantasies, Mapplethorpe was acclaimed for his celebrity portraits and flower images. This is a really great biography. Mostly I like it because it was in fact authorized by Mapplethorpe. I feel like I am getting factual information, which with unauthorized books, you really are getting rumor and no perspective from the subject themselves. I also think Patricia Morrisroe is very objective in her accounts and is very good a giving you the name of whom she obtained the story or quote, so you really don't see much of "her" in the book. In other words, it is well researched. When something sounds like opinion or an aside, it almost seems that it came from Mapplethorpe himself. She truly is a good writer and I trust her, which is saying something considering all the garbage in the way of biographies.

Patricias' work deserves all 5 starts. Fantastic book. I highly recommend buying it, someplace else, if you're at all interested. Apparently this is a print on demand book. Very poor production value. The actual writing is amazing I just finished and I wish it wasn't over. I went so far as to read to the very back cover which I how I discovered it was a print on demand. I'll have to find a good copy of the book someplace else. The photographs are terrible in terms of reproduction quality. See sample - It's being generous.

Engrossing biography that held my interest throughout. But I must agree with the previous reviewer that the quality of this book is a disgrace. The paper, the typeface, the smudgy ink, the terrible photo quality, all combine to make this a very unattractive book. There is also a "lump" that goes through the entire book. This almost seems like someone was running off copies on a ten-year-old printer in the basement. I like to keep all of my books, but this one is a disappointment. Content is superb; presentation is atrocious.

A superbly-researched study of the controversial photographer, whose work encompassed such diverse subjects as flowers, celebrity portraits and hardcore sexual fetishism. Through unique in-depth interviews with Mapplethorpe, plus many from his inner circle, Morrisroe creates a layered, incisive portrait of an artist whose brief life may have ended at just 42 (1946-89), but whose reputation continues to grow with the passing decades.. A fine companion piece, although far more illuminating, that the recent HBO documentary, which draw quotes from Morrisroe's interviews throughout as primary sources. An absorbing read, and a must for those seeking more insight than a TV documentary can ever offer.

Altho this is an excellent book, the Kindle edition lacks the photo section that was included in the print edition.

I purchased this biography of Mapplethorpe immediately after reading Patti Smith's memoir about their lives together in NYC in the late 60's, early 70's-- Just Kids. I was not disappointed. Not only does Morrisroe provide more details about Mapplethorpe's early years with Patti Smith, she tells the rest of the story concluding with Mapplethorpe's horrible death from AIDS and the controversy concerning his work. Morrisroe does a very good job of presenting a balanced portrait of a very conflicted individual. Moreover, the story will really bring back the devastating affect of AIDS on the NYC art scene in the mid-1980s.In addition to the details of Mapplethorpe's life, there is some very interesting discussion in the book about photography as an art form and what constitutes "Art." I particularly loved her inclusion of excerpts of from the contemporaneous critics of Mapplethorpe's work. My favorite from Ben Lifson: "In Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud talks about artists who descend into what he calls the maelstrom, meaning the unconscious, and they come back and tell us what was there. Robert went into the maelstrom, no question about it, but he came back with an elegant picture postcard --'Having a wonderful time, wish you were here. Love Robert'"

He said it himself, "my life is far more interesting than my photographs." I can't argue with that, and the book is a fascinating read. Additionally, reading this book has given me a much greater understanding of his art and why he was such a master. I revisited his work after reading much of it, and I'm glad I did. I'm about 1/2 way through it, and then plan to read Patti Smith's book, Just Kids.

A truly enjoyable slice of life in the service industry by Darron Cardosa. His blog is phenomenal, but the way he has turned his experiences into a book is specifically worthy of praise. There have been lots of books that came from blogs, but unlike some of the others, you can tell that he has a genuine love of and aptitude for writing in both formats. Anyone who has ever had to work with the public, food service or not, will relate to the struggle, frustration, and exceptional joys of working with a quirky cast of characters to serve yet another quirky cast of characters. With the occasional celebrity appearance and flashback to his early days, the author truly has something to say and the flair to keep us spellbound while he does. Anyone can bitch about work, and we all often do. But Cardosa conveys in a genuine, eloquent manner that beyond his moniker, he loves what he does. As I read this, I was reminded, in a way that I had temporarily forgotten, that I also love what I do. Especially compared to the cost of the therapy you might otherwise need to come to that realization, this book is a steal.

I spent many years in the restaurant business, both in the front and the back of the house. I am retired from all of that now, but if there is one thing I took away from it all, it was how to NOT be an a-hole as a restaurant customer.I have been a fan of the Bitchy Waiter blog for years, and often identified with what he writes about. This book did not disappoint. He is funny, profane (yes, he does drop the F-bomb a lot, but wouldn't you in his situation?), and truthful. This book should be required reading for anybody who ever sets foot in a restaurant at all, ever.Buy this book, enjoy it, and please be sure to tip your server when you go out to eat!

Full Disclosure: When I was 19, I was dying for a pizza and I had just enough to order one so I did and I didn't have any left over for a tip and the delivery guy wasn't subtle in his disgust. And why should he have been? This was over a quarter of a century ago and I still, to this day, feel badly about it and never forgot it. So while this book and blog certainly did not recover any memories, it does make me feel worse and I wish i could find that guy now and make it up to him."The Bitchy Waiter" isn't just a "Best of" Cardosa's highly addictive "Bitchy Waiter" blog that keeps me laughing every day - even though it is filled with some of the most memorable moments of his years waiting tables and dealing with the good, the bad and the very ugly. The oh so ugly. There's also new material, funny asides, photo commentary. I received my book the other night and as I am taking a trip in the next few days, I thought, "How perfect, I will read this as I travel!" Well, the best laid plans of mice and men. I am already halfway through and I can't stop laughing.But underneath Cardosa's funny stories and quick wit are some really hard truths. The way people treat service staff, just the casual disregard and rudeness can be really disheartening. You see it in the comments section on Cardosa's blog all the time: "Why are we expected to tip you? I don't get tips at my job!" (That's probably because you get a full wage, you dunderhead.) People seem to think if you're a server, you've somehow "failed" in life or are in transit. Cardosa makes it clear, many people are prety happy being exactly where they are. Sp why be a bitchy waiter? Please. Take any job you've ever been in, add "bitchy" before the job title, write a book and there you go. You can do it too. Cardosa just got there first, he's most likely a lot funnier than you.Highly recommended for everybody to read this book. Give a copy to your friend who is rude to servers. Anonymously send it to the person who is a lousy tipper. Maybe you'll start to feel much more empathy for the people who wait on you and you'll stop saying, "When you've got a minute..."

Been in the business for 35 years. This is the book I started- but never finished writing years ago! It's all spot on. People not in the industry need to read this to learn how to behave in restaurants. By the way the title of my book was coincidentally going to be called The Customer is Not Always Right: how to get the service you deserve when dining out. Great job, Bitchy! At times I laughed until my stomach hurt.

I was in F&B for 45 years and Bitchy has hit the nail on the head. Chapter after chapter he lays out what servers face every single day. He is also, hysterically funny, and I scared my cat several times because I laughed so hard! These things he talks about I faced every day and it really does wear on you even if you DO love making people happy! Some, you just can not.I read every "insider" waiter/server book I can find and THIS is the best one ever!!Buy it, get yourself a glass of wine, and settle in to be amused, amazed, and occasionally, disgusted by the patience it takes to deal with the public in a situation they will never understand.I still have dreams about a full restaurant, I'm the only one there, and the kitchen is miles away!!! As a customer who has never been the server, I find The Bitchy Waiter's commentary both refreshing & entertaining! While some of his observations may seem heartless, they nevertheless illustrate the endless harsh realities faced by service people every day. Likewise, he brilliantly shows us that servers are real people who deserve our respect for doing something that many of us could never do.I absolutely LOVE the epilogue, "dessert!" It's relevanteven to those of us NOT in the restaurant industry & it gives me hope that I, too, can be proud of who I am & what I do, and that if I work for it, I can realize my own dreams!

This book is markedly inferior to Microsoft's own public documentation on encryption in the .NET framework.The premise of the book is fundamentally flawed. The author believes that the best way to understand and deploy cryptography is to collect a series of primitives --- SHA2, AES, RSA, and, later, HMAC. Get each primitive working using the .NET APIs. Then stitch them together in a single program, and call it a day.Modern cryptographers don't design systems this way and neither should you. The joinery between different crypto primitives is where most of the fatal bugs live! Instead, we design cryptosystems, in which each component is carefully designed to work together. We present these cryptosystems as high-level libraries, like Nacl/Libsodium and Tink, which relieve developers of the need to choose primitives and fit them together securely. Everything this book attempts to implement can be done better, quicker, and more safely with libsodium .Net.Further, this book suffers from a common failure of "cryptography books written by non-cryptography-engineers": it's constantly introducing and (at some length) coding insecure cryptography, meaning that the bulk of the book is filled with cryptography examples that are grievously insecure. Most of the book's encryption examples are, for instance, a CBC padding oracle attack waiting to happen. Ciphertext authentication is introduced late in one chapter (and incorrectly), and then haphazardly removed from future examples. The book discusses secure password hashes in a "bad, better, best" framework that suggests salted hashes might be a reasonable option, then discusses PBKDF2. It introduces AES only after lengthy examples using (insecure) Triple DES.Even in the later examples, where the "feature" of authenticated encryption is presented, the constructions it illustrates are outmoded: despite .NET having offered AEAD authenticated modes like GCM since 2007, this book will have you implementing CBC mode, as if you were implementing an encryption program for MS-DOS, without even a hint at how a modern .NET encryptor would work.When it's not providing bad example code, it's busily filling up pages with failed attempts to explain theory and mechanism. A discussion about CBC IVs (which are not in fact "also called nonces") includes several paragraphs extracted verbatim from a (weird, broken) WhatIs.com definition, which it then contradicts just a paragraph later. Heaven help you if you go into the author's introduction to RSA with any notion of what a finite field is; the book's "Modulus arithmetic" explanation will quickly force it out of your brain. I had to reread JP Aumasson's "Serious Cryptography" (highly recommended) several times to detox.You can do better --- both for the money, and for the quality of the systems you'll build --- by sticking to Microsoft's documentation, and that's what you should do. I bought and read this book so you won't have to. You're welcome!
