Beautifully written, a collection of essays and the occasional poem about a sport - sort of - but more, about a way of life. These little stories transport us to mountains in New England, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Utah - I can't remember them all. The skiing is phenomenal, but there is so much more here. These are stories of living in community, raising self-reliant children, having grand adventures, and discovering deeper meaning in life.I didn't love every one of these stories, but as a whole I loved this book. How wonderful to be transported for a few hours into the high peaks out west, to imagine the view, to feel the speed, to meet the people who give meaning to David Rothman's life.

This author may be a university English teacher but he forgets one of the most important components of being a good writer, which is to tell an entertaining story in an easy to read fashion. The type of storytelling that leaves you hanging on every page wanting to keep reading just to see how good it can get. Instead he tries to impress his reader with rhetorical concepts and words that he probably used on his Freshman class to berate their writing samples. Each page of this book is so dull due to the style of writing that I cannot encourage hardly anyone to read it. I buy and read dozens of books each year and rarely write any reviews at all, but this book disappointed me so that I felt compelled to alert any future reader that the title and book cover suggest much more fun than you can ever find within its pages.

Hmmm well pretty boring. The stories are like 1 page little tidbits. No real "story" about ski life towns. Eh, don't really recommend.

Artfully written, a good read even for someone who doesn't ski but loves the mountains. For those who do ski, especially Telemark, it will be especially meaningful and fun to read.

"Living the Life" is the best book about skiing and life I've ever read. David Rothman has seemingly organized his entire life around skiing and lived it with enthusiasm, curiosity, and humor. The book consists of 35 short essays and is both a memoir and a meditation about skiing as a way of life that touches "far more than mountains and snow--it comes in contact," as Rothman says, “with friendship ...grief, ambition, faith ...remorse... and regret, which is to say: everything that matters."Rothman grew up and learned to ski on the east coast. Like many others, he graduated from alpine skiing to alpine racing and then from area skiing to backcountry skiing. His metamorphosis paralleled a geographic shift that brought him west: to Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado, a migration brought on by a chance year off devoted to skiing and racing. His deepest ties are to, and some of the very best stories are about, Crested Butte and Boulder, Colorado and all the many skiable peaks in between. This is not a book like Chris Davenport's account of skiing all the 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado in a year, an epic adventure by an extraordinarily skilled climber, skier, and winter mountaineer.What makes this book work is not Rothman's exploits so much (although his account and the accompanying photos of him dropping into "Spit" for Brains at Snowbird is scary enough) as Rothman's skill as a writer. He writes with clarity, grace, and with a poet's awareness of the tenuousness of life, the fragility of relationships, and the importance of asking why skiing matters, where the mountains end, when do turns stop, and how we will ski if we completely destroy the alpine environment? What makes this book work is not Rothman's exploits so much (although his account and the accompanying photos of him dropping into "Spit" for Brains at Snowbird is scary enough) as Rothman's skill as a writer. He writes with clarity, and grace and with a poet's awareness of the tenuousness of life, the fragility of relationships, and the importance of asking: why skiing matters, where the mountains end, when do turns stop, and how we will ski if we destroy the environmental conditions it requires?Rothman is a storyteller and the many stories in "Living the Life" range from those that describe a particular skiing adventure (and the friends who were also there) to those that describe the small town life of Crested Butte or simply a memory from his past, for example, of skateboarding outside his father's "dusty office where he went to document the unheralded alienation of the elites." I'm a telemark skier so was partial to Rothman's stories of telemarking or trying to, but there are stories enough here for all who inhabit the winter world outdoors armed only with planks and poles and persistence. If you are a skier (alpine, telemark or backcountry) you'll want someone to give this to you for your birthday, Christmas, or Hanukkah. If you know a skier, you'll make her happy if you put "Living the Life" in her stocking. And if you are not a skier but just want to understand what makes skiers (and snowboarders) tick, why we live for cold, steep mountains and the people in them, buy it for yourself. No other book has ever explained or explored the skiing life so well.

I read this book in one great gulp, not because I'm a skier but because I'm a devourer of David Rothman's writing. But as I read, a miracle happened: by the end of Living the Life I had become a skier. What Rothman does so skillfully is first to grab you with the power of his story-telling, and then he hauls you up into the mountains with him, and cuts you loose on the steepest slopes. Believe me, the book's a rush!

I bought this book because I heard the older version was really helpful and I saw this newer version for cheaper so I thought i'd give it a try. It contains 3 full length practice test and many helpful tips for your overall experience. I felt like the reading comprehension, math and grammar were the best subjects in the book. The questions in those sections were very close to the actual hesi so they gave you good practice. The chemistry and biology sections were horrible. The questions were NOTHING like the hesi questions and asked many random questions regarding plants that was no where on the hesi. The vocabulary/general knowledge was okay, however when I took the hesi I did not have any real general knowledge questions so I felt it was not needed in this section. I did not have to take the A&P and Physics so I cannot vouch for them. I think this book isn't worth buying, I would recommend getting PocketPrep Hesi A2 app. Its around the same price and has over 1,500 practice questions with every subject. I used the app and the hesi admissions assessment book and passed my first try.

This book is good and helpful for the hesi exam. The only part I did not find too helpful was the practice exams for anatomy.

Would not even give it 1 star ... have never rated a book before, however this one is ridiculous, totally non-informative rant about how great this guy is and how he should be paid more by insurance ..... he is totally naive in regard the economic debt system and basically an ignorant individual asking you to pay for his self promotion ... if he really is called Moses, it is a pity the sea did not end it's parting while he was in it. Waste of time and money and does not enhance any +ve aspects of human nature

In the past I have had spent thousands of dollars seeking healthcare help when things were looking dark in my life. I heard about this magnet treatment, and checked it out even though my insurance didn’t cover it.  I was surprised how immediately my life turned around.  I wanted more information on this topic and see how I could get my family to participate and found Durazo’s writings.  As far as I know, he’s the only person in the biomagnetic field that is actually writing content that is practical and motivating from both a personal self-care perspective and one of encouraging people to participate in improving healthcare worldwide.  Causing a shift can be as easy as making a phone call and/or sending a letter to the insurance company…or how about sending them a copy of this book so they know what you’re talking about.  I know my healthcare needs have greatly diminished even though I’m now paying for this service out of pocket – I do wish my insurance paid for it though. Â

This book is a great reminder that we have a voice and we need to use it. We can't Expect the insurance companies to move forward if we are not being vocal and telling them how great biomagnetism is, how it is helping our families, and that we want it covered. Don't wait for someone else to do it. Great Book. Highly recommended

I purchased this book at the request of and for the use of a grandniece who is studying computer science. I assume she must give it a five-star rating or she wouldn't want to own her own copy. I ordered it via Amazon and had Amazon arrange direct shipping to her. R. Woodworth

This book will in a very short time span teach you even some advanced features of ray-tracing. Unfortunately, it is simply to high paced, unless you are an advanced programmer with some knowledge of ray-tracing already.

It's a classic book, worth to buy and read. It would be nice If the code printing is clearer and more pictures.

The book "Realistic Ray Tracing" contains a description of all important ray tracing techniques and a guideline to the implementation of a ray tracing program. The book covers the basics like ray-object intersection, lighting, viewing and materials, but the major part of the text deals with advanced techniques monte carlo integration, antialiasing, soft shadows or path-tracing.The book contains only some 150 pages and each technique is thus described in 3 to 10 pages. The language used is clear and the book is very readable. It is very easy to read the whole book or just to pick a specific chapter and get an idea of one topic. The main focus of this book is the implementation of a ray tracer. All techniques are described in a way that enables the reader to easily code them. All the math needed is provided and procedural pseudo code fragments are given in some chapters. Despite being quite a thin book, the selection of topics is very good and most of the important ray tracing techniques are covered.There are some problems with this book though. First of all, this book does not describe the ray tracing algorithm very well. Readers completely unfamiliar with this method might have some difficulties understanding the overall picture. This is also true for the implementation part. Although a lot of techniques and basics are explained, the author does not cover the implementation of a ray tracing framework.Some of the chapters are simply too brief. The mathematical background is covered but not explained. In the first chapter, the author introduces 4-dimensional homogeneous coordinate systems without explaining them. This could have been done in 1-2 pages and would have helped to better understand a lot of the transformations used throughout the book. And the chapter about triangle meshes only deals with different approaches to store a triangle mesh. No word about the triangulation process itself.Overall, this is a lovely book that covers a lot of ray tracing techniques, but is is no introduction to this method.

The book started off amazingly well. I was very excited to find out what next. The book did a good job of introducing the technique and giving hints on how to implement them. After the first several chapters, however, the implementation gets left behind and the reader is given a series of chapters on disjointed topics. The author who was weaving such a beautiful web toward the beginning stopped doing everything that make the book great. There was no longer any explanation about how one topic led to the next and implementation was no longer touched upon. This book is an adequate introduction to the concepts but I found it sorely lacking when it came to help on implementation.

I had begun making a ray tracer just a few days before reading this book. At the time, I had already read through quite a few articles regarding the basics, and some vector arithmetic (which I was completely ignorant of before hand). I had a basic ray tracer only capable of shadows and rendering spheres and planes. I skimmed through this book hoping to find algorithms for reflections, diffusion, and refraction. I was absolutely amazed! The algorithms were clearly explained in a way that was easy to implement them into my tracer. I later read through the book more thoroughly and found out about techniques I had never heard of before such as soft shadows and sampling. However, there are some issues. First of all, the ending is more of jumbled mentions of theory, rendering it much less practical. I would also agree with other reviewers that this is NOT a book for readers that are unfamiliar with ray tracing in general or high level mathematics. In short, this book will waste no time giving you all of what you need for a ray tracer and nothing that you don't.

I have to second the person who said that the people who recommended this book never actually sat down and tried to implement the material inside of it. The book is riddled with mistakes, and the errata online keeps growing by the minute.Shirley (and Morley) are brilliant and pioneers in the field, but they write a book like any hardcore professor you've taken in college would have written it --- dry, coarse and assuming of much knowldege. A reviewer here mentioned "disjointed" and that actually is an understatement.I am by far no means a graphics person, but being a college graduate with at least two classes in graphics under my belt, I expected to just shoot through this book. This was definitely not the case.Beware of slim and short books, and this is one of them. I found the classic "An Introduction To Ray Tracing", Andrew S. Glassner (another genuis) to be much better. Also, I've heard great things about Matt Pharr/Greg Humphreys "Physically Based Rendering -- from Theory to Implementation". That one's currently in the mail shipping to my house.No offense to Mr. Shirley -- however please let edition 3 of this book (assuming there will be one) cater to a wider audience, such as myself.I wonder if the first edition was better...

Rajiv Chandrasekaran is an assistant managing editor of The Washington Post and currently heads the Post's continuous news department, which provides breaking news stories to the paper's Web site, washingtonpost.com. Prior to that he was bureau chief in Baghdad, before, during, and after the war. Previously he served as Cairo bureau chief and Southeast Asia correspondent, and covered the war in Afghanistan. He joined the Post in 1994. He has served as the journalist in residence at the International Reporting Project at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies in Washington, and as a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, also in Washington.

This is the definitive take on the US occupation of Iraq and everything that went wrong. Chronicling the lead up to the invasion to the hand over of sovereignty in June 2004 it shows how intelligent people with the best of intentions created such a mess.The main take away is how officials were chosen for political connections and ideological purity rather than their qualifications. Time and again Middle East hands and Arabic speakers are passed over for trusted conservatives.There's a lot of good stuff in this book about the occupation was run and how it went so wrong. And a lot of lessons for people in government today.

Rajiv Chandrasekaran is with the Washington Post; he has spent time in both Afghanistan and Iraq since the American missions in both places. His experiences in Iraq as well as his interviews with those in Iraq during the time of the CPA (Coalition Provisional Authority, under the control of Paul Bremer) and the precursor organization (under Jay Garner)provide important bases for this work. The picture is not pretty, and ties in with arguments advanced by other books on Iraq written of late.First, as readers already know, there was no real plan for after the war. The book makes it clear that much of the redevelopment of Iraq was ad hoc. Since no one understood how much in tatters the electrical grid was, there was no real preparation for dealing with the degraded system. And the end result was that infrastructure was worse after the war as compared with before. And the CPA was unable to do much to restore power and make the system work better.Second, many of the "leaders" selected by the CPA were chosen for their political connections. For instance, very young (twenty something) people who had built IOUs from the Administration for, for instance, working in the Bush election campaign, were selected to head units for which they had no expertise at all. Sometimes, seasoned administrators were pushed aside, occasionally because they were not gung ho enough politically.Third, the CPA was fairly clueless about what was happening on the ground in Iraq. They were slow to pick up on the insurgency, for example. It took them some time to understand the importance of the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. They became landlocked in the "Green Zone," as conditions worsened outside.The book begins with a quotation from T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia), who said in 1917: "Do not try to do too much with your own hands. Better the Arabs do it tolerably than that you do it perfectly. It is their war, and you are to help them, not to win it for them."The book indicates the number of times when Iraqis were given secondary status to Americans, whether in running organizations or on political decision-making. One important neoconservative, on reflection of his experiences in Iraq, became most disillusioned. He commented to the author: "I'm a neoconservative who's been mugged by reality (page 5)." What began as an easy military victory turned into a quagmire. As the American involvement moved from liberation to occupation, things began to disintegrate. As one Iraqi told the author (page 290): "The biggest mistake of the occupation was the occupation itself."All in all, one of the more powerful books about the American incursion into Iraq; it is also one of the best descriptions of the CPA's reign in Iraq. It triangulates strongly with other volumes.

A review of this book would have to start, first and foremost, with what this book is and is not. It is definitely not the story of the run-up to the Iraq war, the actual military invasion or the counter-insurgency. Instead it tells the tale of the those hired to engage in the civilian reconstruction of the country after the "official" end of hostilities (i.e., after President Bush `s famous aircraft carrier landing underneath the "Mission Accomplished" banner) until one year afterwards (the approximate time pro-consul Bremmer departed the scene).As many Amazon reviewers have noted in their reviews, the book does an extraordinary job at pointing out how pervasive political loyalty was in hiring. There are many stories of very well qualified individuals being passed up for positions so that political hacks from organizations like the American Enterprise or Hoover or Stanford Institutes or those with "reasonable" political views (i.e., anti-abortion) could be hired instead. Examples included medical doctors hired to administer Iraq's hospitals and medical infrastructure without any third world experience and a financial administrator to run Iraq's equivalent of the Security and Exchange Commission who was straight out of school without a single day of work experience. The hiring of these "yes" men had results that had the obvious predictable results (i.e., an inability to get the country's hospital systems and stock market exchanges up and running).Before Christ was born Confucius had the following exchange with one of his students (Analects of Confucius 13.15): "Is there one single maxim that could ruin a country?", the student asked. Confucius replied: "Mere words could not achieve this. There is this saying , however: `The only pleasure of being a prince is never having to suffer contradiction'. If you are right and no one contradicts you, that's fine; but if you are wrong and no one contradicts you - is this not almost a case of `one single maxim that could ruin a country'?" The placing of political loyalty over qualifications in hiring clearly illustrated the dangers Confucius was attempting to point out.Another consequence stemming from the placement of political loyalty over and above qualifications, though related to it and one that few other reviewers seem to have commented on, was the resulting idealist detachment from reality that resulted. The 21 year old hired to get Iraq's stock exchange up and running, for example, did not want to settle for just that simple objective but instead strived to set up the leading stock market in the Arab world. Considering the "on the ground" facts this proved impossible. Hence instead of, possibly, achieving the objective of just getting the stock exchange up and running at its pre-invasion level of efficiency and transparency the fool could not even get a stock market to open up at all. Another political loyalist, an administrator responsible for Iraq's university system, instead of striving to get the universities open by supplying textbooks and desks did his very best to push making Iraq's university system comparable to those in Western nations. Again, considering the "facts on the ground", this proved a fantasy and the university system could not even open during his reign.All of this reminds one of the English admiral Lord Hood's actions at Toulon against the French Directorate (in the early 1790s). There, he had a number of objectives open to him. One was destroying the French fleet. Another was establishing a beachhead for the anti-royalist forces to rally against The Directorate. A third was to foster a counter-revolution by supporting the royalist forces already gathered there. Any one of these may have been achievable realistically. This book is fun and educational. I got this book for my daughter who is going into the second grade in a couple of months. She has always been fascinated by dinosaurs or anything related to science. She truly enjoys reading and has been tested at a 5th grade reading level. She had no trouble reading this book either. She said that she really liked the book. I asked her why and she said that she learned a lot by reading this book. Even though she already knew a great deal about dinosaurs. She also said that the illustrations were really great. I skimmed through the book myself and I would have to agree that the pictures in the book are pretty good. I would recommend this to any child who has any interest and dinosaurs I think they'll learn something and have some fun in the process. I did receive this book for free or at a discount for a honest and unbiased review. I rely on other Amazon reviews to determine how I'm going to spend my hard-earned money. You would think a book titled Big Feet, Small Feet would be about feet! It isn’t. It’s about dinosaurs, and didn’t discuss their feet at all. It opened fine on my Kindle app for android.The book has lots of images and animated pictures of dinosaurs. They are 3-D renderings and aren’t super fancy, but they show the right dinosaurs for the descriptions, and for the little ones it’s more than adequate.The descriptions are very brief and use big words my kiddos didn’t understand. As I was reading it to them, I was able to explain most things, but I’m no expert and we actually had to look some things up. On one hand, this is good because it motivates them to ask and research questions. On the other hand, it’s hard for them to self-read and not terribly informative. It held their attention well enough, I’m just feeling like it didn’t cover much, but had a lot of photos. I suggest checking out the kindle version to preview before buying if you can.I received this book in kindle form for free in exchange for my honest review. I only review items I have used, and I assure you my review is unbiased and based on the quality of the product I received. My goal is to provide as much honest and helpful information as possible to help you make an informed purchase. I got this ebook for my stepson who is 7 and loves dinosaurs. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with the quality of this book. For starters, the grammar is poor at best, to the point that even my stepson was noticing that sentences were not beginning with capital letters, and the tense of the words changing made it difficult for him to read. By the title of the book, I expected more about fossils, but there is nothing about feet or footprints for that matter. As well, the picture on the cover is a great one of a fossil. The pictures in the book were computer graphics and pretty poorly done at that. I am glad this ebook is currently being offered for free, as I would have been disappointed if I had paid for this. If this book were edited properly, and the time spent on the cover was applied to the pictures inside, the book has the potential to be much better for even the youngest of readers. Big Feet, Small Feet: Book of Prehistoric Animals for Kids. Another great book for kids by Speedy publishing. The first page gives the definition of prehistoric. The pages are filled with drawings and renidtitions of what the artist thinks certain dinosaurs looked like. There are pages of Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Pterodactyle (remember the "P" is silent in this word), Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus, Microraptor, and velociraptor with information and facts on each one of the previous dinosaurs.My grandson is in 3rd grade and this book would be awesome for him. I believe this book should be a part of his extensive library. Something that should be a great read for him. He reads way above his age as he grows so does his knowledge of the world as did his mother at his age. Reading invokes imagination, knowledge from a foundational status. Reading makes the brain work where television arrests the brain function by not making any one think. I'm a public school teacher, and I was looking for a book to read to my class to teach them about Diwali. While it's probably great for Hindu children, it is too religious for me to read in class.

The illustrations are stunning! The story and writing are appropriate for slightly older kids - at least 7+. Would def recommend!

This was a gift. I don’t know much about Diwali so I don’t know how accurate it is but the quality of the book was nice.

It has detailed story about Diwali. Perfect and a must for every Indian kids to understand their roots.

I gifted this book to my kids, as well as my nieces & nephews for Diwali (ages 1-4). I was very pleased with the quality of the book. The illustrations and stories are beautiful and even I learned a few things from the book. I was concerned that the book itself was paperback and not a hardcover book - though the pages are very thick and sturdy. The price tag was a little steep for me, but this book will be one that is read over and over again during the holidays.

Beautifully illustrated book --- colorful backgrounds and characters! The story of Diwali, the reason for the lights and finally, a mini story at the end with a moral.

Great book. Gave enough for my kid to get interested in Diwali. One thing I didnt like that sometimes the narration didnt match the illustration on the page but maybe the next page.

I just got this to read to my 4 year old. We are trying to teach him the story of Diwali and this book is simple to read and he loves the pictures.

I had expected more from This Lullaby after LOVING The Truth About Forever, but it was kind of a let down.This Lullaby read more New Adult than Young Adult. The characters seemed older than 18 with their fake IDs and long history of partying. That being said, I enjoyed it. I eagerly read the whole thing, desperate to find out what would happen between Dexter and Remy.Dexter was a swoon-worthy lead (although he's no Wes...). He was so sweet with his dog Monkey and I liked that he was part of a band, thus challenging Remy's rule to never date a musician. But I would've liked a little more depth from him. Why did he drop out of Business School? Why is he so passionate about music?But my biggest pet peeve with this story was Remy's voice...it was so negative and cynical, which was okay at first, but got really irritating by the end. I would've loved more growth from her as a character.Overall, this was a different sort of contemporary YA novel, not so much a romance as a story about a girl learning to open her heart up to love after watching her mother struggle through four failed marriages.

Hmm, I wanted to like this book. I loved Truth About Forever and Just Listen. I am looking for the same type of "magic," that I found in those books in her other works and I haven't found it. I'll start with a few good points. The descriptions and writing were beautiful in some spots. Dessen has a great command of the English language and knows how to tell a story.A few bad points, spoilers may follow. I had a really hard time liking Remy. The smoking, the drinking, the sex, the swearing. She was just a "rougher" character then some of her other female leads. I get that she was trying to change and turning over a new leaf, etc, but those changes didn't make her likable. She was still kind of bitchy. I think that was sort of the point, because she says at one time it was something she was proud of. But apart from her mother's many marriages, and something that happened in her past, I didn't feel like I got a good enough reason why she was proud of being a bitch? Why would anyone want to be known for being mean? I guess that concept is just foreign to me.I felt like I wanted more. When the book teetered on giving me what I wanted it would continually fall short. Instead of pivotal moments being narrated and two people interacting and exchanging words that meant something, those moments were assumed and faded to black. I wanted her to dive into those conversations between two people and have them actually tell the truth. Like it was always on the surface of something great, but never went deeper under the surface. And when two characters went under the surface it was a small blip on the map then they were right back to the surface.The main character just wasn't very self-aware.

When I started reading Dreamland, I felt like it was going to be a book I struggled to finish. I just couldn't get connected to Caitlin and I felt like I was reading from a distance instead of being right there. About halfway through, that changed.Caitlin has always lived in the shadow of her older sister, Cass. So when Cass leaves one night without warning, Caitlin feels like it is her responsibility to step up and fill in that "perfect child" role. At the same time, she doesn't want to be Cass. She doesn't want to have to be perfect. She's confused and doesn't know which way to go. Her confusion ends up leading her down the wrong road, sending her life spiraling down a hole she never thought she'd end up in.In the attempt to step out of her sister's shadow, she falls into Rogerson's. The relationship between these two is heartbreaking, horrific, and realistic. Caitlin's confusion over how she feels about Rogerson is what makes it all worse because I can understand her thinking. Reading about her struggles made my heart ache for her. He met her when she was already down and only brought her lower.I think the reasons I didn't find myself completely loving this book are because of that initial disconnect between me and Caitlin, as well as how blind those closest to Caitlin were. Out of everyone that knew and loved her, not one took enough notice of her downward spiral. I understand why it was done that way, but I still wish one of them had shown something more.Dreamland is a quick read, but a powerful one. It shows that sometimes the weak are actually the strongest and that what we see on the outside my only be an illusion.
