These skills are collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence. The world is changing and the education system must change if the United States is to create the kinds of human beings who have the capacity to be successful in a world that will no longer measure accomplishments by test scores alone. The Knowledge Age has produced such a vast amount of information (doubling every 2 and ½ years) that individuals will no longer be able to memorize every fact and figure. Instead, children will need to develop the following capacities: working together in supportive and encouraging partnerships; communicating effectively through speaking and writing; researching answers to questions in order to supplement an extensive content knowledge base; critically evaluating specifics in order to make informed decisions-(this means having the expertise that enables them to separate the improbable, nonsensical, and untruthful fluff from the truly significant, meaningful, and reliable information); problem solving by utilizing unique or improbable techniques;, and developing the confidence needed to take risks and learn from experiences that might not have been successful.Chapters 2 to 4 discuss contributing factors that have helped provide the impetus to why we find ourselves in this current dilemma. Educational reform sent us in the wrong direction. In most instances, it is because hard skills (skills related to cognitive abilities) are easily measured by tests and those scores are certainly conveyed in a way that lend itself to comparison. It provides an opportunity for significant collaboration.• The single biggest problem in communication is that we think it has taken place (Bernard Shaw).• Speaking and writing are becoming lost arts.• Content alone is not capable of achieving happy, healthy, thinking, caring, and social children who become collaborative, creative, competent, and responsible citizens of tomorrow.• We need deeper thinking-not shallow or surface learning.• Rote learning does not always allow children to apply their knowledge in new situations.• Teaching young children in a FORMAL way represents a “profound misunderstanding of how children learn” (Nancy Carlsson-Paige).• Learning Science has known for years how good learning happens. The 4 keys to learning that promote Level 3 and Level 4 thinking are: Active, Engaged, Meaningful, and Socially Interactive.• Encourage children to ask questions.• If a task can be designed for a robot or a computer, a human will no longer be necessary. Answers to questions in the future won’t come in a multiple choice format and typically will not have a single right answer.• Children need to risk and fail in order to acquire an adequate evaluation of their self-esteem. INFORMED RISKS!• Reducing Academic Pressure actually helps children succeed.• How you learn is just as important as what you learn.The last chapter recommends more Reggio-inspired approaches be adopted in our schools and that we once again value play in the lives of children because nested within play are the seeds of democracy and citizenship.Overall, an outstanding book!

The book says that the 6Cs are important for succeeding in the 21st century and our current education is very far from this. All pretty accurate statements. This is pretty much it.There is chapter about public education that says education reforms and teaching to the test have failed but with not much debt or good evidence why. Then there is chapter for soft vs hard skills that pretty much says "soft skills are important but people focus on hard skills". Then the book goes into long, pointless repetition into all those skills one by one... like creativity is important, they asked employers what they are looking for and they said creativity, schools do not teach creativity, creativity is important, 21st jobs are not like in the past and they require creativity, if you are cars salesman you need to be creative since selling cars is now different and customers are more informed, creativity is really important, teaching to the test does not teach creativity, creativity is important, for example for , we strongly believe that in the 21st century creativity is important!I gave up half-way. Couldn't listen to 3 more Cs. Let me save you some money. The 6Cs are collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence. Some folks proposed us more Cs but we chose those ones. Each of those have 4 levels and are really really important for succeeding in the 21st century.

This is a very powerful book for not only parents but, teachers, teacher trainers, childcare/preschool directors and grandparents as well. It is readable although sometimes tedious and fully supported by quality research. The best evidence of what is known about how to support children’s development is present in this book. If I were designing/starting a school for young children this would be my bible. I have studied child development for nearly 50 years. I have served on Early Childhood teacher education faculties for more than 45 years. I have owned and operated child care and preschool programs. This knowledge of what is in book is the best evidence of competence to successfully support child growth and development.

Adams' conversational tone is perfect for this amazing true adventure story that spans centuries. In a way, it's better than being there, since I'd just be one of those inconsequential tourists getting the superficial overview instead of the rich, meaty history Adams provides.

Mr. Adams took me on a revisit of not just Machu Picchu, but deep into the Sacred Valley of the Incas along the Urubamba River and Ollantaytambo and beyond. I absolutely loved how he was able to weave Inca history (of which im a longtime student) Into the arduous adventure of his trek along Bingham's footsteps. I have traveled to Peru over a dozen times and have many friends in the Quechua communities in and around Cusco. I got many a chuckle about the idiosyncrasies of these hardy and unique descendants of the Inca. I found myself nodding in agreement with the author and enjoyed the interspersing of historic accounts and different aspects of interpretation of what remains a mystery to this day.Yes, it was a true rediscovery of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail which I hiked at the age of 62 in 2002, highlight of my adult life. I'm grateful for the many hours of armchair travel the author provided me as chances are that I will not be able to return unless someone volunteers a golden litter and a couple of handsome chasquis!

I got this and 'The Last Days of the Incas' (by Kim MacQuarrie) as reading material leading up to and while traveling in Peru. 'Last Days' is a heavy historical book (I knew it would be) but I thought I would want some historical background on the ruins and sites we were visiting. 'Turn Right' was more fun and included all the relevant highlights on the historical conflict between the two brothers and Spain's 16th c relationship was with the Incas. I ended up leaving 'Last Days' at a hotel before I finished it.Mark's book contained fun tidbits and factoids that I could share with my travel companions. Sometimes I read whole sections out loud to them. Machu Picchu was the last stop on our 2.5-week journey and it was fun to arrive about the same time Mark did at the end of his book.

Adams, an editor for a travel/adventure magazine, realized that despite his profession he had never been on a proper adventure of his own. For his first endeavor, he chooses to follow in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham, the American explorer often credited with the discovery of Peru’s “lost city” of Machu Picchu.Bingham, who originally received a lot of accolades for his discovery, later became a highly controversial figure. To this day, in fact, arguments about his accomplishments and practices are still taking place, particularly regarding the artifacts that he collected (stole? borrowed?) and took to the United States. There are those who maintain that Machu Picchu was never lost at all; that Bingham merely happened to be the first outsider to come across it. Regardless of whether he truly discovered Machu Picchu or simply became its publicist, Bingham is undoubtedly responsible for worldwide awareness of and interest in the mountain city. I heartily recommend this book if you have any interest in Machu Picchu, Peru, or Indiana Jones. : ) Great book...I was sad when it was over.

My brother and his wife went to Machu Picchu recently; I probably won't ever make it there. I'm looking forward to their first-hand accounts and now that I've read this book I will have more than a vague idea of what they are talking about.I'm not going to regurgitate what other reviewers have said about the author's fun yet informative writing style and how easy it is to understand the historical facts.I loved the cover page artwork, but what REALLY helped me follow the story were the 16 pages of black-and-white photographs, including some dating back to 1911. The 45 photos added immensely to the narrative.If you like reading adventure travel stories, are attracted to South American (and Inca) history, and want to be entertained while you are being educated, you will probably enjoy this book.Now, off to see if Mark Adams has written any other books!

I don't know how it could have been any more perfect. Mr. Adams who writes with a sense of humor and a love of history juxtaposes his grueling trips to Machu Picchu with the trips of explorer, Hiram Bingham who has been given credit for discovering Machu Picchu one hundred years ago. It's not just about the history of the discovery, but also about the events that sourrounded Hiram Bingham for years. An abbreviated biography.Mr. Adams hired a great guide, John, who knew all the right people to hire. John is an interesting and funny man and Mr. Adams describes him so well that I didn't have to see the pictures to know what he looked like.I enjoyed this book completely and would love to make plans to go to Machu Picchu as soon as possible. This book has made me appreciate it so much more than I would have without it.

Full of infos... love it

Damaged

I'm a veterinary diagnostic imaging resident, with little experience in equine imaging outside of veterinary school. This book has been a key part of my base knowledge, and continues to be a reference (especially for it's great diagrams of ligamentous insertions of multiple joints).The only negative is that the binding falls apart rather quickly. I had the book, brand new, for less than 1 month before the front cover began to fall off along with the spine. It had been kept in my locker at work, only taken out for use, and this still happened. The pages have since stayed together, but the front cover and spine are no longer attached to the meat of the book.
