This book of chindogu features some of the most humorous and ingenious inventions ever, inventions so impractical yet addressing real world problems, that they are referred to as "unuseless." The inventions remind me of Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam's cartoons gone horribly awry. Editor Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall explains the concept nicely in the foreword: all these inventions are real and have been manufactured, but to qualify as a real chindogu, the device must be completely impracticable in the real world. Readers are even invited to join and submit chindogu of their own to the International Chindogu Academy. (I am thinking of submitting a Marmoset Crauncher.)The word "chindogu" was appropriated for these inventions as it is Japanese for "odd or distorted tool." That is a perfect description of these items. There are too many for me to list, but all are beautifully explained and illustrated. Some of my favorites include: "Duster Slippers For Cats," in which housecats don dustmops on their paws to assist with household chores (the illustration is priceless); "The Noodle Eater's Hair Guard," which is the silly pink contraption on the cover; "The Back Scratcher's T-Shirt" (which is not only funny, it borders on a good idea); the "Portable Subway Strap" (for those who enjoy holding onto a plunger affixed to the roof of a train); and the "Ear Extender," which gets my vote for best decorative headgear made from colanders.This is a funny book, and is beautifully rendered in color throughout. The only warning I have is that if you read this in long sittings, eventually you may find yourself saying "Hey, that's a pretty good idea!" (I had this thought when looking at the "Butterstick.") I recommend this book to lovers of the odd and obscure everywhere.

A wonderful collection of items for anyone who enjoy the ridiculous. The product overviews are part of the joke, so don't expect too much info who/when/where/what/why these funny items are invented.This is a real example of a real reaction from one of my guests after picking up this book:"Oh my god, I want to rip this book into little pieces."

My first time reading this was in Uniqlo SOHO... and man, I spent a good 10 minutes laughing at the book.Turns out I ordered one on amazon since I regretted not buying it earlierISSA good book

Bought this for my brother as a stocking stuffer, he found it hilarious!

There are creative inventions you absolutely need, there are those you didn't know you needed, and then there are chindogus (Japanese art of inventing unusual gadgets). This is one of the funniest books I've seen in a while. The inventions presented here are so incredibly useless they are hilarious. The best chindogu is probably the book itself: a compilation of chindogus.

Liked the humor and the point of view of this book, quite unusual but also funny and believable

The marketing concept of this book, "Good Weed, Bad Weed", is attractive, as is the book's layout. It's fun and catchy. It's very good for a novice gardener who knows little about weeds. But like "Good Bug, Bad Bug", it is very light on knowledge for the slightly more seasoned gardener. Weeds that I am encountering are not listed; others that I've found to be real pests are listed as "good weeds" or "not-so-bad weeds". If you really want to identify and learn about weeds, find a more solid, comprehensive book. Or, if you get this book, make sure you have other serious and substantial resources to supplement it.

I like it as it specifically helps me chose what weeds I might just control and let stay in the garden. As some one said "a weed is just a plant with a bad marketing program". Some are quite pretty--just not in large numbers that drown out the rest of the garden. Some are very invasive and if not eradicated will soon dominate the garden. With the use of this book, I've isolated a few "weeds" and kept them down to three plants and let them bloom with good effect. Next year I'll probably hit the area with a good pre emergent. Like its companion, Good Bug/Bad Bug, it is a nice addition to the garden library of the common gardener.

It's wonderful to have several illustrations, actual photos, of the plant in different stages. I love knowing what each plant growing in the garden is, weed or not. I was able to identify many local plants and realize some I was naming wrong. Good book to give garden lovers.

As someone who has always believed that the only good weed is a dead weed I approached this book with suspicion and doubt. After reading it, I still have a few doubts, but I will admit that Ms. Gift makes an honest, sincere, and somewhat persuasive argument. Even if, after reading it, you are not ready to turn your lawn into a showplace for "good" weeds, you will at least have a better idea of what you are dealing with and how best to deal with it. And in the end all one should expect from a book is that it gives you good information and allows you to make up your own mind and this book certainly does that.

An interesting little book. I didn't know what to expect and bought it on a whim, but it does have good photos and information. Small enough to carry around the lawn or garden easily. I don't agree with all Ms. Gift's ideas on "good weeds", but that does not detract from my enjoyment of her writing style or the usefulness of the book for weed identification.

I moved to KY several years ago and always wondered if plants I see in the garden was planted by the person living here before. Some were pretty some were not. I kept pestering my wife and neighbors but they kept ignoring me. This book has it all.. Now when I go to the garden to weed, I just take this handy and sturdy book to help me weed..

The only quibble I have with this book is that (IMHO anyway) there are a number of weeds classified as "good" (meaning relatively innocuous) that (again IMHO) should be placed in the Bad category. I do get where the author is coming from but to see wild onion/wild garlic -- which is the utter bane of my gardening existence and has territorial ambitions second only to that displayed by the Soviet Union during the 1960s -- described as a "good weed" practically made me retch. Nutsedge, too, is described as a "Not So Bad Weed" when in fact it would probably survive a nuclear winter and come back stronger than ever. I also take serious issue with the author's claim that nutsedge "is probably not worth controlling" in a lawn; clearly she has never seen it take over a large part of one in less than 3 seasons, as its tubers are perennial.

I've bough this book 5 times. I prefer the Teen or Student Edition because it has a short lead in at the beginning of each chapter. For people who are completely new to the Bible. this is a great way to get acquainted with scripture and with the Old Testament in particular, which can be intimidating for new believers. I found it all very readable and enjoyed it and I've read through the Bible 6 times. I recommend it for anyone who loves the Bible.

My teenage son has a friend at his youth group who was reading this version and mentioned he thought he would like it since he felt he could actually sit down and read it. It is made more in story form without verses and such. No it is t going to be verse by verse accurate as it is more of an overall picture. I like that idea as i personally think we are losing the big picture theme of the scriptures as we all want to sit down and discuss what a verse means to us other than true expository bible teaching. But i digress. This isnt for everyday bible use and should definitely be supplemented but if it gets my kid interested in reading scripture and doesnt take the very loose approach to translation as the message bible then i see that as a big plus.

ery unique and interesting way to read the bible. Presented as one full story rather than broken into parts. Written I a way in which teens and anyone reading can easily understand. I loved that it gave a lot of explination of people and places. It really drew you in and made you want to keep reading. The tabs on the side made it easy to find any particular section of the book. The timeline at the bottom of most of the pages really helped keep track of what happened and when. There are fantastic discussion questions and descriptions if characters of the bible. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to read the bible and really get a good understanding of its teachings.

I have the regular version of The Story (based off of the Holy Bible) and I really enjoyed reading it before "tackling" the Holy Bible in a year. My niece requested a bible for her birthday and I chose this one to start because I feel it really makes the word of God interesting for someone diving in fresh. It contains many scriptures just like the bible, but the bulk in a continuing story. It's like the milk before the meat, but I think meat eaters will enjoy it too! It personally has helped me when discipling to speak to the world in parables, like Jesus.I once read an inspiring quote that said, "If you can't explain it simply, you haven't learned it well enough." I think Max Lucado has learned the bible petty well.

It puts the Bible in chronilogical order with the prophets in their proper place and reads like a novel with Gods story tieing in with our lower story. Would recommend it as required reading for everyone. The teen edition is the same as the adult edition except it is a paperback and cheaper.

The Story is very helpful for those who want to get an overview of the whole Bible, but it would be even more helpful to have the books, chapters and verses indicated in the text.

Excellent way to get the big Bible picture in an approachable way.

Easy to read. Around a 5th grade level. It reads as a narrative, sums up and leaves out some of the many words that don't add to the narrative. We are only in "Genesis" so far, but loving it.

I loved it but,it is not very age appropriate. The memes and things have cuss words👎 This book should be for kids too!!!!

Wow I loved this book so much. A smart and insightful look at a game whose history, if you don't know it, is truly fascinating. I’ve bought this book because of my interest in this game and I was very pleased about this book. There are some fascinating stories of creativity, manipulation and foolish hubris that make this a must read for anyone with even the slightest interest in gaming. All in all, very excellent book.
