This has been a staple in my 5 th grade classroom. Mostly the boys tend to gravitate toward the novel. One my focus reading group selected it as their novel choice. Although the dialect was/is a little tough. Group meetings help to clarify any misinterpretations. My other groups kept asking "what's so funny" as there were many outburst of laughter. I love love this book. I included the audio with the group so they could hear the dialect from a different person. I have also done this as a whole class book and that went well. Some of my other colleagues borrowed my class set and their students enjoyed this book as well.

Elijah of Buxton was a wonderful book. It was full of information about slavery, those who escaped from slavery, and the new settlement in Canada. One thing that struck me was that some of the anecdotes about particular people were a little bit heavy and could be difficult to read, particularly for children. But, there was also so much humor in the book, as well. One theme is that Elijah is referred to as a 'fragile' child. But, by the end of the story, you see that he has accomplished things that many adults would not have been able to accomplish. Parts of the story were sad, such as when Mr. Leroy basically dies of a broken heart.I knew that slaves had escaped into Canada, but I never knew anything about Buxton. Because my dad is from Ontario and most of my family lives in that province, there was a sense of pride in Canada being their 'promised land.'I look forward to reading more books from Mr. Curtis.

Joyful and tragic. Spirit soaring and gut wrenching. Laughter and tears. Such is the story of Elijah of Buxton. Only Christopher Paul Curtis can take me to the lowest depths of man's inhumanity and then bring me back on the path of hope and resilience. As always, his ability to capture the child's voice and experience is superior. Curtis will have you feeling you are that young boy growing up as the town's first child born in freedom. A must read for children and adults, for schools and for homes.

This is a book everyone should read. Normally I don't enjoy books that other people say, "You *should* read." I did learn a lot from this book, but I also enjoyed it immensely. I think it would be very difficult NOT to like Elijah. He is a very complex young man, living what seems to be a very simple life. The dialect is sometimes a bit difficult to understand. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had listened to someone read the first few chapters, but eventually I was able to "hear" the dialect in my head. School, riding an old mule vs. horse, fishing, parents -- it all seems normal until suddenly it doesn't. The "normal" to "oh!" can happen in a paragraph, sometimes in a single sentence. It's a book that kept me doing some mental gymnastics. It didn't just hold my interest - it kept me fascinated. In places it shocked me. In places I cried. And then I got to that amazing final chapter... It's been weeks since I first read this book (I've reread it twice) and I still don't know exactly what I'm feeling throughout that final chapter. I feel sick. I feel proud. I'm horrified. And elated. I put the book down and try to think, but I'm feeling too much to think. I've learned a lot from Elijah of Buxton. And I'm still learning.

Don't tell the kids that Elijah of Buxton is an historical fiction, or they will refuse to read it. Tell them it is about an eleven year old boy who runs away from home and sneaks into another country to right a wrong he feels is his fault. Christopher Paul Curtis has once again created a young male character with brains, honor, and the innocence of youth. Elijah is the first native born child in the town of Buxton, a highly successful Canadian community of ex-slaves from the states. Through Elijah's eyes we see how the physically and emotionally beaten down adults create a strong vibrant free world for their children. We also see through Elijah's eyes, when he runs off to the USA, the terror slaves lived with every day, and the faith that allowed them to keep going in spite of the terror.

Purchased for 10 year old Daughter 4th Grade Battle of the Books. It was a challenging book to read, but one of my daughter's favorites out of the 20 books they were asked to read.

Buxton is a community just north of the Canadian border to which escaped slaves could flee for freedom. Elijah's parents were two such slaves, but Elijah himself was the first free child born in the community. Here he is a pre-teen, working alongside an adult, attending school and Sunday school, and engaging in mischief appropriate for his age and the time. As a character, he is easy to relate to and care for. His unique rock-throwing, chunking, skill plays interesting and sometimes humorous roles in the story. His basic good nature and sensibilities merge gracefully with his "fra-gile" side. The opening funny chapters draw the reader in well, but the characters and events keep one firmly with Elijah. A very appropriate book for an intermediate-grades reader, especially one studying U.S. history, a lone reservation is that, because the speaking is dialectically true, there are times when the speech or era-appropriate words may be unclear to a young reader ("I'm-a" or "our'n" for example or "spectacles" or "brogans"). Those moments are largely addressed if a reader's context-decoding skills are strong. In that case, I recommend this without reservation as a book to both learn from and enjoy greatly.

This book is defiantly one of my favorites and I will tell you why. It is timeless in the lessons that it presents, which are great for young adults striving to learn who they are and who they are not. These lessons are clearly manifested through the main character Elijah, as he grows from a fearful child to a man of great understanding by the end of the book because of the experiences is goes through. Without giving to much away, I will say I laughed, I was sad, I was anxious to find out what happens in the end. One of the things I didn't like we're at time the book seemed dry, to much monologue. Overall great book.

Rather than attempting to change the system or point out it's failures, Jonathon Mooney and David Cole have created a practical guide to help kids jump through the necessary hoops to achieve whatever larger, postschool goals they may have. While much of the material is written for kids who've received the label LD or ADHD, many of the suggestions can be just as helpful for those who've been labeled "gifted," or any other student who feels frustrated with the daily routine of standard education. The introduction (personal histories of the authors) is great reading for parents of LD or ADHD kids, and much of it has a humorous tone that makes it equally appropriate (and approachable) for discouraged adolescents. From the terror of weekly spelling tests to the few inspiring teachers and tutors the two encountered, the tales are equal parts entertaining, poignant, and encouraging to others who may well be experiencing quite similar events. There's little discussion of what methods are right or wrong--ultimately, both authors take a fundamentally pragmatic view, and it's "right" if it worked. A steady focus on study skills fills the majority of the book, and Mooney and Cole take what are generally pretty familiar stands on note-taking and test preparation and break them down into easily digestible concepts. With different methods for different types of learners (visual thinkers are encouraged to use maps and brightly colored markers), students will find plenty of help in creating notebooks, focusing their attention, and even appropriate ways of conducting the infamous all-nighter. The premise of this book is very misleading. I’m honestly not sure how this happened. It seems that the authors are very empathetic to the needs of LD/ADHD students, yet, there is nothing in this book that will actually help those students.Learning Outside the Lines provides information on some basic study skills which would be very useful for those students that have never learned to study. Where I went to high school most-all of these were taught to us alongside the same tactics the authors deride (“Just study harder,” etc.). These are the same sorts of things you’ll be able to find doing a simple Google search for: “How to study well” (or) “how to become a good student,” things like: learning to compartmentalize assignments for greater manageability and maximizing information retention from textbook readings. The authors do make a point of allowing readers options to “individualize” their studying and education and to ‘take what works for you, burn the rest’ but will any of this actually specifically help someone with LD/ADHD? No.What this book does contain is solid but there’s nothing in this book that doesn’t apply equally well to non-LD/ADHD people. The personal accounts, yes. The actual information, tips and guides, no. It seems to, almost, take for granted that the reader has, somehow, overcome their disability (and past/emotional relationship to school) and is now, in college, ready to begin as if they were never LD/ADHD and merely need to learn “how” to study. There’s not one bit of information on how the ADHD students who, according to the epilogue, could hardly even stand still into their 20s, managed to actually do the reading (skimming, it seems this book so frequently advises), the outlining, the research and the classroom participation required to follow this advice in the first place. There’s hardly any explanation for how a dyslexic student who couldn’t write until junior high became an Ivy League honors English Major, and much less any sort of “process” that could help others with different disorders follow in his footsteps. It’s as if in their climbing the ladder of education, now trying to help others up, they’ve forgotten the bottom rungs exist.

Last December I was a college student with ADHD without hyper activity (formerly known as ADD) convinced that I would be expelled from school due to my grades. Try as I might I have never done well at school- no matter how hard I try I seem to come up short. I literally was considering the unthinkable to avoid the embarrassment of failing out of college and to end all the pain. A wonderful professor saw my struggle, sat me down and let me cry. Afterwards, she handed me this book to read over winter break. It was as if the authors had seen my life from inside my head. This book was exactly what I needed to revive me and give me the courage to face my challenges. As it turns out I didn't even need to worry about my grades but my worry had blown things out of proportion With Learning Outside the Lines in hand I came back to campus in January with a new outlook on my life.

The most valuable element of this book is simply the theme of "empowerment" that is woven into every story and chapter. Jonathan and David tell their stories, in a raw and honest fashion. They point out problems with the general education system that leave struggling students to believe that THEY are the problem. Of course, Jonathan and David dispel many of these myths.They include a pretty thorough description of effective study techniques. My only wish is that there was a "cheat sheet" summarizing a list of all of the strategies for specific learning situations. You have to weed through a lot of story-telling and description to find the strategies. Don't get me wrong, the stories and explanations are VERY important. It's just a bit challenging to find the Action Plan. Nonetheless, this is a great resource.I found many useful tips, but I mostly appreciated the author's perspectives, often captured in interesting sound bites:- Referring to study skills as "Power Tools"- Explaining how to "unpack the lecture" in order to take good notes- They are frank, but they are real: "Most study skills presented by teachers operate under the assumption that all teachers can lecture well."- They are practical, endorsing what they call "Pragmatic personal learning."- They emphasize efficiency: "Cover-to-cover reading is NOT the way to go..."I am an expert in this field, and I am a big fan of this book! (By the way, it's GREAT for ALL students, not just students with ADHD/LD.)

I can't remember how old I was when I first read this book, but having always been a fan of ancient Egypt, I knew from the start I'd enjoy it. The first of our main characters, April, who's also quite interested in historical peoples, starts off feeling bitter and dejected because her semi-famous mother has sent her to live with a grandmother she barely knows, but that quickly changes when she meets Melanie. Melanie is just as imaginative as April, so the two quickly form a bond, and along with Melanie's little brother Marshall, eventually stumble upon a decrepit, empty lot behind a local store. Their new game only includes the three of them at first, then slowly expands to include Elizabeth, the new girl in their apartment building, and Toby and Ken, a couple of popular wise-crackers from their school. As the mystery and intrigue of the Egypt Game grows, so does the danger in their town, though exactly what happens, I'll leave a mystery. Suffice it to say the gang may just be in over their heads.

The year this book was published was the first time I read it aloud to my sixth grade class. We all fell in love with the characters, except the red hair man with red dots. Every year after that until I retired I read the Egypt Game to my sixth graders. I was asked the first day of school if I was going to read the Egypt Game to them by those who had older brothers, sisters or neighbors who had been in my class before. For over twenty years I read that book aloud to many children and it never lost it's appeal or became out of date. I taught my children that the real test of good literature was that it could pass the test of time.My daughter and I had been talking about the book just a few days before it appeared. When I saw it I had to buy it for a quick reread. It still stood the test of time even though I have been retired for twenty- two years.

The one of two novels that first got me hooked on the mystery genre when I was still in elementary school. It's cute, and quick (at least now, a decade later). It also is what fed my interest into ancient civilizations and writing in general. It has a dear place in my heart and never disappoints the child inside of me. Would recommend to parents looking for something their children can read.

I remember reading this book as a child which started my lifelong love of all things Egyptian. I’m delighted to have it back and added to my collection. What a joy! I received this book promptly and can highly recommend the seller.

Zilpha Keatley Snyder is an exceptional author. I bought this book for my nephew who had become fascinated with ancient Egyptian culture. I remembered reading this book when I was approximately his age. I became a fan of hers through the Below the Root series. Her writing captured my interest and I recommend any of her works to those who are interested in adventure / fantasy books. She is truly a great author.

Love this book from my childhood and can’t wait to share it with my girls!

This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I don't know how many times I checked it out of the library. I was feeling nostalgic so I ordered it along with a couple other kids books. And it's still a great book.

Lately, I discovered YA author Scarlett Haven and had been reading through her different series. New Hope Academy takes us into the life of Katerina Vasin. Katerina is half Russian and half British. Her family or what remains of her family as one of her brothers Eduardo was recently killed in a car accident is still in Russia, whereas Katerina has been shipped off to boarding school in America. New Hope Academy is the boarding school for the Rich and Famous. Katerina doesn't know why she is here, as her family is definitely not rich and her dad is an Engineer for an engineering company. However, Katerina is about to discover everything she knew about her father was a lie and that in the world of Russia he is the most powerful man alive. In Russia, Katerina never had a boyfriend, but here she has captured the attention of several guys including Damon - the President's son. Is it fate that landed Katerina in the sight of Damon or simply a coincidence? Find out in Episode #1 of the New Hope Academy series by Scarlett Haven.

I feel like this could've been a lot more interesting if the main character hadn't been so unlikable. Now, I'm fine with heroines who aren't all sugar and spice, but you have to balance that kind of negativity with something interesting… Wit, intelligence, something.Katarina's only personality traits seem to be that she is judgemental, aloof, and cold to the people who somehow find it within themselves to welcome her wholeheartedly into their social circle. I had Bella Swan flashbacks, but unlike the Twilight-verse, I just couldn't get into the author's world.Unfortunately, this seems to be something that we see in YA a lot: an interesting premise with a dull-as-dirt heroine whose only identifiable personally traits are uninteresting or unpleasant. I love the idea of an episodic, mysterious drama, but just couldn't get behind Katarina's voice.

I did end up reading the whole series. I liked the premise, and while there was some mention about religion it wasn't overbearing. It was the h talking about her religious beliefs, and that was really it. There were a lot of simple editing errors that should have been caught. Because the author wrote 4 episodes a lot of the 1st part in each book was a recap. When each episode is only about 100 pages long that doesn't leave much for a story. It would be better for the author to just write 1 book and charge 2.99.I liked the story, it was different and very interesting. I wish that the author got more editors/beta readings going through it to get out simple mistakes. I also wish that there was more character development. The HEA was sweet, and it was a clean romance.

This is hard for me because I really liked this series for the not part. My biggest complaint is with the last book. It feels unfinished. Yes most of the action/ mystery was cleared up but there were still things left unfinished. Yes I get that there is going to be another book from a new characters POV but that is the problem unless it is going to be from Tristan's POV these characters still have a story to finish in my opinion. My problem with the series as a whole was some editing mistakes. Which I don't take stars away unless it is just atrocious which this was not. But I mention it because I know some people make a big deal out of it. So if this is a pet peeve of yours beware. I did really like the plot, characters, and settmgs (locations). I enjoyed this on the whole but I am disappointed that the author chose to end these characters story to soon.

I read a lot of books, some are pretty bad, but this is by far one of the most poorly edited and poorly executed works I have ever had the misfortune of starting to read. The basis is fine, a girl from another country coming to America for boarding school. The fact that she knows nothing about America even after the author wrote that she has watched American tv shows is unbelievable. There are so many disconnects and I'm only 40 pages in. I am not usually one to bash items or leave bad reviews but this is not a book nor should it be classified as one. The religious beliefs are also too much and if it was mentioned in the synopsis I would have been ok with it. There have already been 3-5 pages of religious beliefs in here. Although I am accepting of all beliefs I don't need lessons nor do I need to be preached at, thank you.

Ok so first up, this is not a book, it is an episode and is even described that way by the author except on amazon.Secondly it is a cliff hanger like most episodes are so don't expect a full story here. It's cheap enough so that is not a real issue but if you are like me and hate getting a book and finding this sort of cliff hanger well just buy episode 2 as well and see how you go.Thirdly, sadly the author is pushing her religious beliefs at you a lot of the time and that is really annoying. It is one thing to flesh out a character as having religious beliefs but this kind of pap just made the book feel annoying to me.Fourthly, the text needs to be professionally edited. There are missing or incorrect words on most pages and you keep having to put in the missing words or think of what she was really trying to write. At first it seemed to me that this was part of the main character as she is Russian and going to school in America but no, all the characters have missing words or incorrect words in their speech.Fifthly, the political view is very Americanized even though the main character is Russian. It's one of those, if you are Russian you are a terrorist but if you are American you are a Spy things.There is lots of potential in the characters and the underlying story line but much more time needs to be spent fleshing both out. The characters accept huge changes in their lives as if it is nothing and things just move on without sufficient explanation or time for them to absorb the changes.I can't recommend this to other readers because of the mistakes. Even the reading list in the back of the book gets major things wrong. For example it says this is book 2 and Luck is book 1 but this really is book 1. Very annoying.

This is one of the hardest books I've ever read. My sister's friend sent it to me after the death of my son. It took me a few months to want to read it, and even when I did, I struggled to finish it. The author, Nancy Guthrie, wrote it after the death of her daughter, Hope, from a rare genetic disorder. Her insights into the hearts and minds of those who have lost children is precious, as many books on grief are not written from this perspective. She is wise and intentional as she walks the reader through the book of Job, exploring Job's reactions to loss, his friends reactions, and God's reactions. Ms. Guthrie continually points the reader to the hope of the Gospel.This is my go-to book to give to friends experiencing the incredibly painful loss of a child. I've ordered it for my church library, given a copy to my pastor, and sent it to women around the country. I always tell them it isn't easy to read, but it is good.

I lost my fourth child, second daughter unexpectedly in May at 40 weeks and 3 days. We have no solid answers for her passing. We have trusted God with our fertility and are leaving the size of our family up to Him. The sudden loss and all that transpired between has caused a great deal of grief for my husband and I. Nancy's explanations of going to church again, talking with, though well meaning, insensitive people and her love for God through her struggles having lost not one but two of her children then also highlighting the areas of Job in his grief. Just amazing! I am buying this book over and over again to give to other loss moms in HOPES that it brings them the comfort it brought me.

I didn't want to study Job as I have before, but she went so deep into the entire Bible and the meaning of life, it was good to change my focus to what is important. Lots of time required to do these lessons, however. It would be better broken into smaller chunks, as it requires too much time every day. Good lessons, though.

Excellent book. I shouldn't call it an easy read but did go thru it rather intently. I so respected the author. In a time where we pray to bend God's will to ours, she was praying for strength and submission to God's will (my words). found that amazing and really am glad i read it. LOVED the scripture references in the back. feasted on them. So sorry for all you have been thru but oh so grateful for sharing with us. (Liked when your husband commented that he didn't think it would hurt as much being a Christian, but it does. thought it was just me and I was a wimpy Christian or missing something big. no, losses really hurt.

In 1998, doctors diagnosed her newborn daughter, Hope, with Zellweger Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder that gave her less than six months to live. After Hope's death, Guthrie's husband had a vasectomy. Nevertheless, a year and a half later, she finds herself pregnant again. This book is one that I have read myself two or three times and I have probably given away 8 copies. For anyone struggling with the loss of a loved one, breakdown of a marriage, illness and sort of suffering this book offers hope. Written by a woman who has walked the painful path of the loss of a child, and her journey with God. It is also a Bible study of the book of Job, the ultimate example of the believer's response to suffering. Easy, fast read, broken down into short chapters.

Fantastic book! It bought back some memories that I have worked through and was an affirmation of the the Truth about God's love and care for those who have taken the step of faith to make Jesus Christ the Lord of their life.

Buyer beware - because this book addresses several different tests, the portion that addressed the SSAT is disappointingly brief and there is only one practice test. Also, the more in-depth analysis of answers is on-line and not available in the book. This makes reviewing your answers unnecessarily uncomplicated.

I have always been a sucker for The Princeton Review, especially as an aspiring boarding school student. I began working with this book in August, working through each drill and studying the material for two months, 3 hours each day; (only exceptions are weekends, varying from 1 hour to 4). The reading section is great, especially the formatting. I felt very prepared for it when taking the test and ended up doing very well on that section. As for the verbal section, that's a different story. I really believe that I spent time learning vocab that wasn't at the test. Not a single vocabulary word was on the test. The quantitative section, oh boy! I have very good comprehension with mathematics, and when I was working through the drills in this book I knew something was a little fishy. It did indeed get progressively harder, but when it came to the material on the test, it had absolutely nothing in similarity. It gave you a lot of math vocabulary, fractions, multiplication and division but very little geometry. Sure, I felt very strong about adding decimals and multiplying fractions, but I really feel that when it comes to the SSAT/ISEE you need to practice and be prepared for every single question since it is timed. I believe if you really want to succeed on either of these tests, you are better off with the official prep, even if it is ungodly expensive. Now I am working with the SSAT Online practice, Kahn Academy based on the material from the SSAT Practice tests and IXL.com.All the best!

This is so perfect for those who haven't experienced SSAT&ISEE before, and don't know what is the specific process. this book will guide you through the vocabulary, math, reading, and writing, I find out that was really helpful. ( the book is long if you are a slow reader you will probably spend several month to read through and totally understand. So buy it a year before your test! Fast reader just skip this)

Very helpful for studying for the ISEE! My son did all the practice tests, and we methodically worked through all the rules and tips for answering test questions. Super helpful to ease his anxiety prior to the real test! He was well prepared.

Good for the price but the content is not very organized. Very hard to use.

This book was very useful to me, it taught me many diverse elements that contribute to the ISEE and SSAT test.
